Chapter 1 – The Night the Hunters Arrived

The helicopters circled Blackthorn Manor like silent predators.

Nathan turned toward the towering windows.

"What the hell is that?"

Before anyone answered, headlights flooded the circular driveway.

Black SUVs.

Government vehicles.

Private security.

Within seconds, the mansion's massive front doors burst open.

Men and women dressed in dark suits entered with military precision.

At their center walked an older man with silver hair, wearing a charcoal overcoat despite the rain.

He didn't hurry.

He didn't need to.

Power never rushed.

My father.

Richard Sterling.

Nathan frowned.

"Who let these people in?"

No one answered.

Because every electronic lock inside Blackthorn Manor had just disengaged remotely.

My father stopped a few feet from me.

His eyes swept across my blood-soaked dress.

Across the welts covering my back.

Across the riding whip still hanging loosely from Nathan's hand.

For one terrifying moment...

He said nothing.

Then he removed his coat and gently wrapped it around my shoulders.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"I should have come sooner."

My composure finally cracked.

"I wanted proof."

"You have more than enough."

He turned toward Nathan.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

"You hit my daughter."

Nathan laughed nervously.

"I think there's been some misunderstanding."

"She's emotionally unstable."

Celeste immediately joined in.

"She attacked me first."

My father looked at one of his security officers.

"Play the recording."

The sapphire pendant transmitted crystal-clear audio through hidden speakers.

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every lash.

Every laugh.

Every confession.

Nathan's own voice echoed through the grand hall.

"Two hundred... now you'll remember your place."

Celeste's face lost every trace of confidence.

Nathan dropped the whip.

"I..."

"It isn't..."

My father raised one hand.

Federal investigators stepped forward.

"Mr. Nathan Ashford."

"You are under investigation for financial fraud, tax evasion, conspiracy, money laundering, and aggravated assault."

Another team approached Celeste.

"Ms. Celeste Monroe..."

"You are under arrest."

She screamed.

"This is ridiculous!"

"You can't prove anything!"

One investigator calmly held up a tablet.

"We already have the offshore accounts."

Her expression collapsed.

I watched without speaking.

Four years of silence...

Had ended in four minutes.
