Chapter 9 - MY MOTHER’S FINAL MESSAGE

My mother’s voice had not changed in my memory.

It was warm.

Steady.

Certain.

Hearing it inside the underground archive made fifteen years disappear.

I was thirteen again.

I was waiting beside the front window for a car that never returned.

The recording continued.

“Victor believes Amelia can unlock the central archive when she turns twenty-one.”

“I changed the system.”

“She will not have access unless you authorize it with her.”

“Protect her from the truth until she is old enough to choose.”

My father looked at me.

Pain filled his face.

He had obeyed part of her request.

He had protected me from the truth.

He had failed to protect me from Victor’s daughter.

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“I discovered that someone inside Vale Dominion is helping Victor.”

“I do not know who.”

“I am going to Saint Orison to secure the original Meridian ledger.”

“If I do not return, do not trust anyone who claims to know what happened.”

The recording ended.

Celeste removed the drive.

“My father did not kill Lillian.”

“Then who did?” I asked.

She glanced toward Conrad.

For the first time, the attorney looked nervous.

My father noticed.

“So did I,” he said.

Celeste raised the pistol higher.

Conrad slowly moved his hand toward his rifle.

My father spoke again.

“Victor never had access to Lillian’s boat.”

“Someone inside Vale security changed her route.”

“Someone who later disappeared into private legal practice.”

Conrad aimed his weapon at Celeste.

Everything happened at once.

Celeste fired.

Conrad fired back.

Nathan pulled me behind a server cabinet.

My father struck the emergency control.

The archive lights went dark.

Gunfire echoed through the chamber.

Then silence.

Red backup lights flickered on.

Conrad lay near the elevator.

His rifle had fallen several feet away.

Celeste crouched behind the terminal.

A dark stain spread along the sleeve of her coat.

My father remained beside the emergency panel.

Nathan shielded me with his body.

The irony was almost unbearable.

The man who once harmed me was now trying to protect me.

It did not erase anything.

But it revealed that cowardice had always been a choice.

The archive purge reached five minutes.

Federal agents struck the outer door again.

Celeste crawled toward Conrad’s rifle.

Nathan moved first.

He kicked the weapon away.

Celeste raised her pistol.

I grabbed a metal storage case and struck her wrist.

The gun slid across the floor.

My father reached it before she did.

“Stop,” he ordered.

Celeste looked up at him.

“You won’t shoot me.”

“No.”

My father held the weapon steady.

“My daughter deserves to see you answer questions.”

Celeste laughed through the pain.

“You still believe courts reveal truth.”

“They reveal enough.”

The outer doors opened.

Federal agents entered the archive.

Rebecca Sloan followed behind them.

She ordered Celeste and Nathan separated.

Nathan did not resist.

Celeste did.

Agents restrained her near the terminal.

The purge countdown reached two minutes.

Rebecca looked at my father.

“Can you stop it?”

“Only with dual authorization.”

We stood before the terminal.

My father placed his hand on the left scanner.

I placed mine on the right.

The system requested a final phrase.

My mother’s message echoed in my mind.

Protect her from the truth until she is old enough to choose.

I understood.

The archive had never been a weapon meant for one person.

It required a family to decide together.

“What did the light protect?” the system asked.

My father looked at me.

“The way home,” we said.

The countdown stopped at six seconds.

The Meridian folder opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

Names of politicians.

Executives.

Judges.

Bankers.

Shipping companies.

Private clinics.

Security contractors.

At the center of the network stood Victor Lang.

But beside him appeared another name.

Graham Holt.

The chairman of Ashford Global.

The man who had pretended to be shocked during the emergency board meeting.

Graham had been inside Meridian for nearly twenty years.

Nathan was not the architect of the criminal network.

May you like

He was the newest king placed on an old throne.

And while we fought Celeste beneath Saint Orison, Graham Holt was still free.
