Chapter 2 – The Secret Hidden Inside the Pendant
While investigators searched Nathan's office, my father arrived.
Richard Whitmore stepped from a black sedan without bodyguards.
At sixty-eight, he looked calm enough to be attending a business lunch instead of dismantling a billionaire's empire.
He embraced me carefully, avoiding the wounds beneath my coat.
"I'm sorry I couldn't come sooner."
"I needed every piece of evidence."
Nathan shouted from across the courtyard.
"You think you've won?"
Richard ignored him.
Instead, he asked me one quiet question.
"Did the pendant capture everything?"
"Almost."
I handed it to him.
A forensic technician immediately copied every recording.
Then his expression changed.
"There are files here you never mentioned."
"I didn't record them."
The technician opened a hidden storage partition buried beneath the recording software.
Someone else had used the pendant years earlier.
Old audio files began playing.
Nathan's younger voice filled the speakers.
"So your father never learned what happened to Michael?"
Another man answered.
"He can never know."
"If Whitmore discovers his business partner was murdered instead of disappearing, everything falls apart."
Richard went completely still.
Michael.
His closest friend.
The man everyone believed had vanished overseas twenty-two years earlier.
Nathan continued speaking in the recording.
"The accident looked perfect."
"No body."
"No investigation."
"We inherited everything."
Silence consumed the courtyard.
Richard slowly removed his glasses.
His voice barely existed.
"My God..."
Nathan's face lost all color.
He had forgotten those recordings existed.
The pendant had originally belonged to Richard's late wife.
Years before her death, she had secretly recorded conversations after growing suspicious of Nathan's family.
