Chapter 2: The Boardroom Where Everything Changed

The elevator doors opened onto the top floor of Ward Global Headquarters.
The executive boardroom was already full.
Twelve directors sat around the polished walnut table.
The Chief Financial Officer.
Outside auditors.
Corporate attorneys.
Representatives of the Ward Family Trust.
No one spoke as I entered.
They simply stood.
"Good evening, Ms. Ward."
I nodded.
"Let's begin."
Five minutes later, Daniel burst through the boardroom doors.
"You can't hold this meeting without me!"
The Chairman looked at him calmly.
"We already have."
Victor Hale, my chief legal officer, handed Daniel a sealed folder.
"Your official notice."
Daniel ripped it open.
The first page carried the company seal.
Emergency Resolution
By unanimous vote of the Board of Directors...
Daniel Brooks is removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
His hands began to shake.
"This isn't legal."
"It is," the Chairman replied.
"The majority shareholder approved it."
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
"You..."
I met his eyes.
"I warned you not to confuse your title with ownership."
The Chief Auditor dimmed the lights.
A projector illuminated the wall.
"Before we conclude, shareholders deserve to understand why."
The first slide appeared.
Luxury vacations charged to corporate accounts.
Private jet flights disguised as business travel.
Jewelry purchased through vendor reimbursements.
A luxury penthouse secretly rented for Chloe using company funds.
Every payment authorized by one signature.
Daniel Brooks.
The second slide appeared.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
Corporate expense reports.
The room became silent.
One director quietly removed his glasses.
"I trusted you."
Daniel couldn't answer.
Then came the final presentation.
"Our forensic review confirms," the auditor continued,
"that every major restructuring which prevented bankruptcy during the last four years..."
"...was personally negotiated by Ms. Elena Ward."
International investment agreements.
Emergency financing.
Debt restructuring.
Strategic mergers.
Every successful decision the media had praised Daniel for...
Had actually been mine.
The Chairman looked around the room.
"The wrong person has been receiving applause."
Every board member stood.
May you like
Not for Daniel.
For me.
