Chapter One: The Footage

The lobby of St. Catherine's Medical Center fell silent.
Every conversation stopped as Chairman Benjamin Ashcroft crossed the polished marble floor and walked directly toward me.
"My niece," he said quietly.
He offered me his hand—not for the cameras, but because I had not yet managed to stand.
The expressions around the room changed instantly.
My husband, Ethan, slowly withdrew the hand he had extended moments earlier for appearances.
His companion, Veronica, stared in disbelief.
"Uncle Benjamin..." I whispered.
He looked at the security director.
"Preserve every recording from this lobby immediately."
Within minutes, the surveillance team isolated the footage.
Everyone gathered in the hospital conference room.
The video clearly showed Veronica approaching me first.
It showed her deliberately knocking my medical folder to the floor before loudly accusing me of creating a disturbance.
Then came something no one expected.
A second camera captured Veronica quietly removing an envelope from the reception counter moments before the confrontation.
The envelope contained confidential documents intended for the Foundation's board meeting.
Security had initially assumed it was misplaced.
It hadn't been.
Chairman Ashcroft looked toward Veronica.
May you like
"Why were Foundation records in your possession?"
No one answered.
