Chapter 8 - HENRY’S SECRET

The fuel spread toward the drain, but Lena kicked the can away before Grant could light it.

Officers rushed the vault. Victoria was restrained again. Grant dropped to his knees with his hands behind his head.

I barely saw any of it.

I held the torn photograph.

My mother, Elena Walsh, had died when I was sixteen. She told me my father had left before I was born. She never named him.

Henry Bennett had entered my life twenty years later as a client, mentor, and secret protector.

Now his handwriting connected him to my birth.

“What did he mean?” I asked Victoria.

She smiled through split lipstick. “Ask your mother.”

“She’s dead.”

“I know.”

The satisfaction in her voice chilled me.

Grant looked up. “Mother, stop.”

“No,” I said. “Let her speak.”

Victoria leaned against the wall. “Henry had an affair with Elena. Brief, embarrassing, and expensive. When she became pregnant, he paid her to disappear.”

I felt the room tilt.

Grant whispered, “Claire…”

Victoria continued. “You are Henry Bennett’s daughter.”

The officers went silent.

I looked at Grant. “Did you know?”

“No.”

“Did you ever suspect?”

His hesitation answered me.

“You suspected.”

“I found letters last month.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was trying to verify them.”

“You married your half sister?”

His face drained of color. “No. Henry’s medical records showed he was infertile after an illness years before you were born. The letters suggested something else.”

Victoria’s smile vanished.

Grant nodded toward a sealed envelope on the floor.

I opened it with shaking fingers.

Inside was a sworn statement from Henry. He wrote that he loved my mother but was not my biological father. Elena had been pregnant before they met. Henry protected us because Victoria discovered the affair and threatened to destroy Elena’s career.

The final paragraph explained the trust.

Henry selected me not because I was his child, but because I was the only person he trusted to defend the museum from his family.

I should have felt relief.

Instead, I felt rage.

Victoria had used my mother’s secret for decades. Grant had found the truth and hidden it while searching for leverage.

Lena collected the statement as evidence.

Then Marcus called from upstairs.

“We have a new problem,” he said over speaker. “The four-hundred-million-dollar transfer cleared during the fire.”

“That’s impossible,” I said. “The bank froze it.”

“They froze the foundation account. The money came from a separate emergency line of credit opened in your name.”

I had never opened that account.

Marcus continued. “The receiving bank is in the Cayman Islands. The beneficiary is the Elena Walsh Cultural Trust.”

My dead mother’s name.

Someone had built an entire financial escape route around my identity.

And according to the digital signature, I had approved it three days earlier.
