Chapter 3: The Price of Pride

Weeks passed.

The mansion was no longer filled with laughter.

It echoed with foreclosure notices.

Luxury cars disappeared one after another.

Artwork was auctioned.

The famous Whitmore estate went up for sale.

Margaret sat alone in the empty ballroom where she had once hosted elite charity galas.

She finally understood.

The woman she mocked had been carrying their family for years.

Brenda left before the month ended.

She packed her suitcases while Andrew begged her to stay.

"You said you loved me."

Brenda laughed bitterly.

"I loved your money."

She closed the taxi door without looking back.

Andrew watched her disappear.

Exactly the way Mariana had disappeared that night.

Only now...

He understood what abandonment felt like.

Several months later...

Andrew requested one meeting.

Just one.

Mariana agreed.

Not because she still loved him.

Because she no longer feared him.

They met inside a quiet café.

Andrew looked years older.

"I read every contract."

She stirred her coffee.

"I know."

"I never thanked you."

"You didn't."

"I never appreciated what you did."

"You didn't."

He lowered his eyes.

"I loved power more than I loved my wife."

Mariana remained silent.

Finally he whispered,

"I'm sorry."

For several moments...

Neither spoke.

Then Mariana smiled gently.

"I believe you."

Hope returned to Andrew's face.

Until she continued.

"But forgiveness isn't permission."

"It doesn't erase consequences."

"It simply means I refuse to carry your mistakes anymore."

She stood.

"I hope you become a better man."

"But you won't become that man with me."

She walked away.

This time...

May you like

Andrew didn't chase her.

He knew he'd already lost the only person who had ever truly stood beside him.
