Chapter Seven: Andrew’s Counterattack
Andrew did not disappear quietly.
Three days after his removal, a video appeared online.
He sat in a dark study wearing a navy suit and an expression of controlled sorrow.
“My wife is experiencing a personal crisis,” he told the camera. “Her family is exploiting our marital difficulties to seize an American company.”
The video spread quickly.
Andrew claimed Mariana had manipulated financial records.
He accused Escalante Capital of staging a hostile takeover.
He denied striking her, calling the incident “a private disagreement exaggerated by edited footage.”
Then he made his most dangerous accusation.
“Mariana has suffered episodes of paranoia for years.”
Margaret appeared beside him.
She described Mariana as unstable, jealous, and obsessed with Brenda.
The following morning, anonymous medical documents were sent to reporters.
They appeared to show that Mariana had received psychiatric treatment.
The documents were false.
But online, falsehood traveled faster than proof.
Reporters surrounded Escalante headquarters.
Commentators questioned whether Mariana was mentally capable of leading the company.
Andrew filed a lawsuit demanding restoration of his authority.
For the first time since the takeover, Escalante Capital’s board grew nervous.
One director advised Mariana to step away temporarily.
Another suggested paying Andrew to settle.
Rafael listened without interruption.
Then he asked his daughter what she wanted.
Mariana stood at the head of the boardroom.
“I want the unedited mansion footage released.”
Rebecca frowned.
“It shows the assault.”
“I know.”
“It will be replayed everywhere.”
“I know.”
“You should not have to expose the worst moment of your life to prove that it happened.”
Mariana looked around the table.
“Andrew is depending on my shame.”
No one spoke.
“He believes I’ll hide because people will see him strike me. He believes humiliation belongs to the person who was hurt instead of the person who caused it.”
Her voice strengthened.
“I won’t carry his shame for him.”
That evening, the complete security footage was provided to investigators and released through Mariana’s attorneys.
The video showed Margaret planting the empty jewelry box.
It showed Brenda discussing the plan.
It showed Andrew striking Mariana twice.
It showed him ordering her to kneel.
It showed guests turning away.
There was no editing.
No ambiguity.
Within hours, Andrew’s public defense collapsed.
But Mariana was not finished.
The next morning, she held a press conference.
“My husband said I was unstable,” she told the cameras. “The medical records he released were forged.”
Rebecca displayed statements from the clinic whose name had been used.
No patient named Mariana Escalante or Mariana Whitmore had ever received treatment there.
Digital investigators traced the forged files to a private intelligence firm hired by Andrew.
Then Mariana addressed the guests who had witnessed the assault.
“Many people were in that room. Some were employees. Some were financially dependent on Andrew. Some were afraid.”
She looked directly into the cameras.
“Fear explains silence. It does not make silence harmless.”
Within twenty-four hours, seven witnesses contacted police.
Two provided videos from their phones.
One servant produced audio of Andrew threatening Mariana before the dinner.
Andrew’s counterattack had not weakened her.
It had encouraged the witnesses he counted on to remain silent.
That night, Detective Hale obtained a warrant for Andrew’s arrest.
But when officers arrived at the apartment where he had been staying, he was gone.
