Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE GRAVE

Charles Whitmore landed shortly after midnight.
By then, the story had started leaking.
Financial reporters had noticed Whitmore Industries’ emergency board action.
Employees had noticed Andrew’s access disappearing.
People who had worshipped the Whitmore family’s money were suddenly asking whether that money had ever existed.
I remained at headquarters.
Andrew refused to leave.
Margaret barely spoke.
Brenda asked three times whether she could go home.
Federal investigators asked her to remain available.
At 12:46 a.m., the elevator opened.
Charles walked out.
He was older than the photographs hanging in the mansion.
Thinner.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakably Andrew’s father.
Andrew stood frozen.
Charles looked at him.
“Son.”
Andrew crossed the space between them.
For one moment, I thought he might embrace him.
Instead, he punched him.
Charles fell against the elevator wall.
Security moved forward.
I raised one hand.
Andrew stared down at his father.
“You let me bury you.”
Charles touched his bleeding lip.
“You were safer believing I was dead.”
“Safer from what?”
Charles looked past him.
At my father.
“From Gabriel.”
My father didn’t move.
Charles smiled grimly.
“Still pretending you were the victim?”
My father’s jaw tightened.
I stepped forward.
“I’m Mariana.”
Charles stared at me.
“Elena’s daughter.”
“You knew my mother?”
“I knew her better than anyone in this room.”
My father took a step.
“Don’t.”
Charles laughed.
“There’s the warning.”
“Same as thirty years ago.”
I looked between them.
“I want the truth.”
Charles straightened his coat.
“The truth is your mother discovered financial irregularities.”
“You stole from her.”
“Yes.”
The admission stunned Andrew.
Charles continued.
“I stole.”
“I was young, arrogant, and convinced I could replace the money before anyone noticed.”
“Elena noticed.”
My father stared at him with open hatred.
Charles looked at me.
“She could have sent me to prison.”
“She didn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because there was another problem.”
He looked toward Margaret.
“She had been stealing too.”
Margaret shot to her feet.
“Liar.”
Charles smiled.
“You always hated hearing that word when it applied to you.”
Andrew looked at his mother.
“What did you steal?”
Charles answered.
“Jewelry.”
“Cash.”
“Private documents.”
“Anything she could sell.”
Margaret screamed.
“We were starving.”
“You were spending.”
Charles snapped.
“You wanted a life we didn’t have.”
I felt dizzy.
Charles continued.
“Elena confronted both of us.”
“She demanded every dollar back.”
“We couldn’t repay it.”
“So I signed over my interests in the company I had just purchased.”
“To Elena?”
Charles looked directly at me.
“To a trust.”
My trust.
Suddenly, the puzzle snapped together.
Whitmore Industries had technically belonged to my family decades before I ever rescued it financially.
My father spoke.
“Elena intended to return control after Charles repaid what he stole.”
“But he disappeared.”
Charles shook his head.
“I disappeared because someone tried to kill me.”
The room froze.
Andrew stared at him.
“What?”
Charles looked at Margaret.
She went pale.
“No.”
Charles removed an old phone from his pocket.
“I kept the recording.”
Margaret backed away.
“No one will believe you.”
He pressed play.
A younger Margaret’s voice filled the room.
“If Charles talks to Elena, everything is over.”
A man replied.
“Then Charles doesn’t talk.”
Andrew’s face collapsed.
Charles stopped the recording.
“I wasn’t hiding from Gabriel.”
He stared at Margaret.
“I was hiding from my wife.”
Andrew slowly turned toward his mother.
Margaret’s arrogance was gone.
She looked trapped.
But then she smiled.
A strange, almost peaceful smile.
“You came back too early.”
Charles frowned.
“What?”
Margaret looked at the clock.
Then toward Brenda.
Brenda suddenly ran.
Daniel shouted.
Security turned.
She reached the conference room door before anyone caught her.
As officers restrained Brenda, a fire alarm erupted throughout the building.
Red emergency lights began flashing.
Daniel checked his phone.
His face changed.
“This isn’t a drill.”
Smoke had been detected three floors below us.

On the floor containing the original Whitmore financial archives.
