Chapter 15 — Thomas Bennett's Final Goodbye

Chapter 15 — Thomas Bennett's Final Goodbye
No one spoke.
The old cassette recorder felt impossibly heavy in my hands.
Its plastic casing was scratched.
One corner had been repaired with yellowed tape.
Thomas Bennett had carried it everywhere.
I remembered him setting it beside blueprints in his workshop.
Playing old jazz while he worked.
Laughing whenever the tape jammed.
I had never imagined it contained something meant for me.
Samuel Ortiz quietly stepped back.
"You should listen."
I swallowed.
"What if..."
My voice broke.
"What if he knew he was going to die?"
Samuel looked toward the unfinished Riverfront Tower.
"He did."
The room fell silent.
I pressed the PLAY button.
For several seconds...
Only static.
Then...
The familiar sound of my father's laugh.
A younger version of the man who raised me.
Not frightened.
Not desperate.
Just...
Thomas.
"Hello, Peanut."
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
Only one person had ever called me that.
"If this recording reaches you, then you've become the woman I hoped you would be."
I closed my eyes.
I could almost smell the cedar wood in his workshop.
His voice continued.
"First..."
"I'm sorry."
"You deserved the truth."
"But you deserved a childhood even more."
Nobody in the trailer moved.
Even Lieutenant Hale lowered his head.
"If you're listening..."
"...then Charles is still alive."
A faint chuckle.
"Which means I probably lost."
Samuel smiled sadly.
"He never believed he'd win."
Thomas continued.
"You need to know something before anyone else tells you."
I held my breath.
"I am not your biological father."
No one reacted.
We already knew.
Then came the next sentence.
"But there has never been a single day when you weren't my daughter."
Maya quietly wiped away tears.
Samuel looked out toward the bay.
Monroe closed her eyes.
Even Hale turned away.
Thomas laughed softly.
"You're probably crying."
A pause.
"Don't."
"I've had twenty-nine wonderful years because you existed."
Another pause.
Then...
His voice became serious.
"Never waste your life searching for your past."
"Build your future."
I whispered,
"I tried..."
The tape continued.
"Charles thinks this was always about money."
"It wasn't."
"He thinks it was about ownership."
"It wasn't."
"He thinks it was about evidence."
"It wasn't."
Samuel nodded slowly.
"I knew he would say that."
Thomas spoke one sentence after another.
Each one dismantling everything Charles believed.
"People matter."
"Buildings don't."
"Families matter."
"Empires don't."
"Truth matters."
"Power doesn't."
Then...
The tape suddenly changed.
A second voice entered.
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Warm.
"You talk too much."
I froze.
Samuel smiled.
"There she is."
I looked toward him.
"My mother?"
He nodded.
"Evelyn."
The woman laughed gently.
"So..."
"...this is the famous Claire."
I couldn't breathe.
For the second time in one day...
I was hearing a parent I had never known.
Her voice trembled slightly.
"Sweetheart..."
"I'm sorry I couldn't stay."
"Thomas saved you."
"Not because you were special."
"Because every child deserves someone willing to stand between them and evil."
She paused.
Then quietly laughed again.
"He was stubborn."
Thomas answered in the background.
"I heard that."
Even after nearly thirty years...
The warmth between them felt real.
They weren't simply partners.
They were family.
Then Evelyn continued.
"If I'm gone..."
"...don't spend your life trying to find me."
My heart tightened.
She already believed she wouldn't survive.
"Find people worth protecting."
"That's how Thomas saved me."
Samuel whispered,
"No..."
I looked toward him.
"What?"
"Evelyn wasn't talking about herself."
He reached into his pocket.
From inside...
He removed an old photograph.
It showed Thomas.
Matthew.
Samuel.
Evelyn.
And...
Three children.
Not one.
Three.
I stared.
"There were other children."
Samuel nodded.
"Two boys."
"And me."
"Yes."
Thomas' voice returned.
"You were never the only survivor."
The trailer became silent.
"There were three children rescued that night."
"We separated you."
"Because together..."
"...you were too easy to find."
Monroe slowly sat down.
"My God..."
Three children.
Protected separately.
Raised under different identities.
None of them knew the others existed.
The tape continued.
"If one child was found..."
"...the other two could still live."
Everything Thomas had done followed the same pattern.
Never keep everything together.
Separate every piece.
People included.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"Claire..."
"...Matthew is one of the children."
I stopped breathing.
"No..."
Samuel nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Matthew wasn't simply my father's partner.
He wasn't just my protector.
He was...
My foster brother.
Raised under another identity.
Watching over me his entire adult life.
Maya covered her mouth.
"That's why he always protected you."
Thomas continued.
"He doesn't know."
Everyone looked up.
What?
"If you're hearing this..."
"...then something went terribly wrong."
Samuel frowned.
"That's impossible."
Thomas explained.
"Matthew never learned the truth."
"I couldn't risk it."
So even Matthew believed he was only protecting Thomas' daughter.
He never knew...
He had been protecting his sister.
Only one child still remained unknown.
The third survivor.
Thomas' voice grew weaker.
As if he already knew time was running out.
"The third child..."
Static.
The tape crackled violently.
The sound distorted.
"No..."
Samuel whispered.
The cassette skipped.
Then resumed.
Only one word remained audible.
"...Rachel..."
The tape stopped.
Completely.
The magnetic ribbon had snapped.
"No!"
I desperately pressed PLAY again.
Nothing.
Only silence.
Samuel gently took the recorder.
"The tape broke."
"Can it be repaired?"
"Eventually."
"But we may have lost the final minute."
The room stood perfectly still.
Only one word remained.
Rachel.
Rachel Kim.
My lawyer.
The woman Charles kidnapped.
The woman Eleanor tried to burn alive.
Could Thomas have meant...
Her?
Before anyone could answer...
Hale's phone exploded with alerts.
Three at once.
He looked down.
Then slowly raised his eyes.
"We've got three emergencies."
"What?"
He read them one by one.
"Rachel Kim disappeared from police protection."
My heart sank.
"Second..."
"The hospital reports Adrian Caldwell escaped again."
Maya closed her eyes.
"And third?"
Hale swallowed.
"Charles Caldwell just released a public statement."
"What did he say?"
The lieutenant handed me the phone.
Live television.
Charles stood before dozens of cameras.
Perfectly composed.
Perfectly dressed.
As though none of the previous days had happened.
He looked directly into the lens.
"My name is Charles Caldwell."
"I've been falsely accused."
"I have one request."
He paused.
Then smiled.
"Bring me my daughter."
The reporters looked confused.
"So that after thirty years..."
"...our family can finally be reunited."
Every television station immediately interrupted regular programming.
The headline flashed across every screen in America.
BILLIONAIRE CLAIMS CLAIRE BENNETT IS HIS MISSING DAUGHTER.
The room fell into stunned silence.
Samuel Ortiz slowly closed his eyes.
"No..."
Maya whispered,
"He's lying."
Samuel looked at the television.
Then answered with quiet certainty.
"No."
"He just made the most dangerous move of his life."
I turned toward him.
"Why?"
Samuel met my eyes.
"Because for the first time..."
"...Charles has publicly admitted he knows exactly who you are."
Outside, dozens of reporters were already rushing toward the Riverfront barricades.
Police radios erupted.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Within minutes...
The entire country would believe I was Charles Caldwell's missing daughter.
Whether it was true...
Or the biggest lie he had ever told...
May you like
Would determine the fate of everyone Thomas Bennett had spent thirty years protecting.
