Chapter 1: The Boardroom Reckoning

The convoy rolled through downtown Manhattan just as the morning sun reflected off the glass towers of Ashford Global Holdings.

Inside the largest conference room on the forty-second floor, twelve board members sat in complete silence.

Every seat was occupied.

Except one.

The chairman's chair.

It belonged to Isabella.

When the elevator doors opened, her assistant, Evelyn Carter, walked one step behind her.

"The Mercer family representatives have already signed," Evelyn said quietly. "The acquisition documents became effective at exactly 8:00 a.m."

Isabella nodded.

"Any resistance?"

"Only from Lucas."

She smiled faintly.

"So... none."

The massive oak doors swung open.

Every director immediately stood.

"Good morning, Ms. Bennett."

She acknowledged them with a simple nod before taking her seat.

At the opposite end of the table sat Lucas.

His expensive navy suit looked wrinkled for the first time in years.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes.

He hadn't slept.

Neither had Richard.

Helen sat beside him, clutching her purse so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

Sophie wasn't allowed inside.

She wasn't family.

She certainly wasn't a shareholder.

Lucas slammed both hands onto the table.

"This meeting is illegal!"

The company's chief legal counsel calmly slid a thick folder across the polished wood.

"It isn't."

Lucas refused to touch it.

"You manipulated this."

"No," Isabella answered.

"I planned it."

She pressed a button on the remote.

The presentation screen illuminated.

A timeline appeared.

Four years earlier.

Every investment.

Every emergency loan.

Every refinancing agreement.

Every silent purchase of company shares through legally registered investment firms.

Richard stared at the screen as if watching his own funeral.

"You..."

His voice trembled.

"...you owned us all this time?"

"I owned enough."

Another slide appeared.

Majority Shareholder: Mercer Capital Partners.

Beneficial Owner:

Isabella Bennett.

Helen's breathing became uneven.

"But... why?"

Isabella looked directly at her.

"Because your family never noticed the woman sitting at your own dinner table."

The room remained perfectly still.

She opened another folder.

"The board will now vote."

Lucas shot to his feet.

"You can't remove me!"

One director slowly raised his hand.

"So moved."

Another followed.

Then another.

One after another.

Twelve hands.

Unanimous.

The chairman announced quietly,

"Lucas Bennett is hereby removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."

Lucas stared at the people who had applauded him only weeks before.

None would even meet his eyes.

Security entered.

Not aggressively.

Professionally.

"Mr. Bennett..."

One guard gestured toward the door.

"We'll escort you out."

Lucas laughed.

A desperate, broken laugh.

"You can't do this."

The guard answered politely.

"We already have."

As he passed Isabella, he stopped.

"You planned this from the beginning."

She finally looked at him.

"No."

"I hoped you'd become a better man."

A long silence followed.

"You just never did."

Security escorted him from the room.

The same way he once promised to have her removed from his house.

May you like

Only this time...

There was no one left to save him.
