Chapter 10 - The Signature He Wanted

At 2:00 a.m., I arrived at the East River helipad carrying a document folder.

A cold wind tore across the concrete.

My father’s security team remained hidden inside nearby buildings.

Ortiz had officers positioned beneath the platform and along the river.

Lauren waited in the command vehicle.

The plan depended on Matthew believing I had come alone.

A black helicopter approached from the south.

It descended without landing completely.

The side door opened.

Matthew sat inside with one arm around Owen.

The child was awake now.

His cheeks were wet with tears.

Matthew held no visible weapon.

That did not make him less dangerous.

“Get in.”

He shouted above the blades.

I stepped closer but stopped beyond his reach.

“Let Owen come to me.”

“Sign first.”

He threw a pen onto the concrete.

The document in my folder appeared to restore the patent license and grant Matthew permanent control.

In reality, it authorized nothing.

The pages contained microscopic tracking fibers and a signature field designed to capture his fingerprints.

I knelt slowly.

Pain spread through my injured leg.

Matthew watched me with satisfaction.

That expression almost made me lose control.

He wanted to see me kneel again.

He wanted the final image of our marriage to resemble the night he had left me on the marble floor.

I picked up the pen.

“Why twenty?”

I asked.

His eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Why did you stop at twenty?”

“Because you finally understood.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You stopped because your arm was tired.”

His face hardened.

“You still think you’re better than me.”

“I think you are afraid.”

“Of your father?”

“Of everyone discovering you built nothing alone.”

His grip tightened around Owen.

The boy whimpered.

I forced myself to remain still.

“You used my work.”

“You used Noah’s numbers.”

“You used Lauren’s ambition.”

“You used Victor’s money.”

“And now you are using a child.”

Matthew leaned toward the open door.

“I turned your ideas into an empire.”

“You would still be sitting on a kitchen floor without me.”

“Perhaps.”

I opened the folder.

“But the empire still belongs to the person who created its foundation.”

I placed the false document on the ground.

“Release Owen.”

“Sign.”

“Release him.”

For one dangerous second, neither of us moved.

Then Lauren’s voice came through hidden speakers around the helipad.

“Matthew.”

He spun toward the sound.

Large digital billboards on the neighboring building suddenly lit up.

The recovered recording began playing.

His voice echoed over the river.

You wanted proof.

Now you know who owns this family.

Matthew’s face collapsed.

Every screen displayed the same message.

LIVE EVIDENCE TRANSMISSION ACTIVE.

He looked down at the document.

Then at me.

“You set me up.”

“No.”

I said.

“You recorded yourself.”

Sirens erupted below.

Matthew dragged Owen backward and shouted at the pilot to lift off.

The pilot did not move.

He removed his headset.

May you like

Then he raised both hands.

“I’m NYPD.”
