CHAPTER 2 — The Camera Never Blinked

The front door slammed shut behind Daniel Whitmore.
His voice echoed through the mansion.
"Step away from my daughter."
The maid froze.
The half-eaten bag of chips lay scattered across the marble floor beside her.
Little Sophie looked up from where she knelt.
"Daddy..."
The word came out so quietly it barely reached him.
Daniel crossed the foyer in three long strides and dropped to one knee.
He gently lifted Sophie into his arms.
She immediately buried her face against his shoulder.
Her tiny body shook uncontrollably.
He looked at her scraped knees.
The torn hem of her dress.
The bruises beginning to darken on her wrists.
His heartbeat slowed.
That only happened when he was truly angry.
He stood and turned toward the maid.
"What happened?"
The woman forced a nervous smile.
"She was playing."
"Children fall."
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the security camera mounted above the chandelier.
Then toward the glowing phone lying on the staircase.
"I know."
The maid frowned.
"Know what?"
"That my daughter didn't fall by herself."
The color slowly drained from her face.
Daniel picked up the phone.
The screen showed a live security feed.
One hour earlier, his office had received an automatic alert.
Unusual movement detected.
He had opened the camera remotely.
Just in time to watch the maid shove the mop bucket toward Sophie.
He had seen the little girl lose her balance.
He had heard every cruel word.
Especially one.
"Your father won't believe you."
Daniel quietly pressed a button.
The recording began playing through the home's built-in speakers.
The maid's own voice filled the mansion.
"Cry all you want."
"Nobody listens to spoiled little girls."
She staggered backward.
"I..."
"It isn't what it sounds like."
Daniel looked at her without emotion.
"It sounds exactly like child abuse."
Before she could run, two members of the household security team entered the foyer.
May you like
"Escort her to the library."
"The police are already on their way."
