Chapter 10 - TERESA’S PUBLIC LIE

The video had half a million views by morning.

People who had never met Amy called her manipulative.

Lazy.

Ungrateful.

Some accused her of isolating me from my family.

Teresa never mentioned the forged deed.

She never mentioned the lien.

She never mentioned the storage units.

She simply told a story about a devoted mother who had spent months caring for her grandson.

Then she said Amy had turned me against her.

I wanted to respond publicly.

Amy stopped me.

“Don’t.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s what she wants.”

I stared at my phone.

“She’s destroying your reputation.”

“No.”

Amy said quietly.

“She’s trying to make you angry enough to look unstable.”

The insight stopped me.

For months, Teresa had studied Amy’s weaknesses.

Now she was studying mine.

So we said nothing.

Instead, investigators followed the money.

Two days later, Hall called us into his office.

He had built a chart across an entire wall.

Accounts.

Companies.

Loans.

Transfers.

Arrows connected everything.

Bradley Family Holdings sat in the center.

“Your mother controls this company through nominees.”

“Who?”

“Mason is one.”

“Betsy?”

“Another.”

Hall pointed to three more names.

Relatives I knew.

Then one I did not.

Patrick Sloan.

“Who is that?”

“A financial consultant.”

Amy went still.

“What?”

I asked.

“The woman who came to our house.”

“That wasn’t a woman named Patrick.”

“No.”

“But she said Teresa introduced her as Sloan.”

Hall turned to another file.

“Patrick Sloan has a wife.”

He showed Amy a photograph.

She pointed immediately.

“That’s her.”

Melissa Sloan.

Licensed real estate broker.

Patrick Sloan.

Former loan officer.

Husband and wife.

Both linked to multiple transactions involving my mother.

The birthday-party scheme had professionals behind it.

Not just relatives.

Hall moved to another section of the chart.

“Here is the important part.”

He pointed to a company called Volunteer Property Solutions.

Melissa Sloan controlled it.

That company had been scheduled to purchase my house.

I stared at him.

“Purchase it?”

“For significantly below market value.”

“How?”

“After the planned refinance.”

He explained the structure.

My mother intended to create additional debt against my home.

Then the property would appear financially distressed.

A sale to Volunteer Property Solutions would supposedly solve the problem.

The company would acquire the house cheaply.

The debts would be paid from proceeds.

But because those debts had been artificially created by Teresa’s network, most of the money would circle back to them.

Amy whispered.

“And we would lose the house.”

“Yes.”

I thought of the birthday entry.

TRANSFER AFTER SIGNATURE.

“That was supposed to happen Friday.”

Hall nodded.

“But you came home early.”

One afternoon.

One decision to surprise my family.

That was all that had stood between us and disaster.

Hall was about to close the folder when his assistant entered.

She whispered something.

He looked at me.

“What?”

I asked.

“Your mother just posted bail.”

Amy’s face changed.

“But the protective order—”

“Still applies.”

Hall said.

Then he looked toward the window.

“There’s another problem.”

May you like

“What problem?”

“Betsy Callahan is missing.”
