Chapter 15 - The Birthday Video

Amy cried in the hotel bathroom that night.

Quietly.

So Frederick would not hear her.

I stood outside the door and felt completely useless.

Eventually she let me in.

“I hate this.”

“I know.”

“I hate that they made me afraid of our own backyard.”

“I know.”

“I hate that Frederick’s first birthday is going to be this memory.”

I sat beside her.

“It doesn’t have to be.”

She looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

I took out my phone.

The original birthday party footage was still there.

But so was another recording.

The baby monitor.

I had forgotten it stored audio clips whenever noise exceeded a certain level.

We opened the app.

There were dozens of recordings from the previous months.

Most were Frederick crying.

Some were Amy singing.

Then we found one from three months earlier.

Teresa’s voice came through the nursery.

“Amy, sign it.”

“I want Connor to read it first.”

“He already has.”

“Then why isn’t his signature here?”

“He signed another copy.”

Amy’s younger voice sounded exhausted.

“I don’t feel comfortable.”

Then Teresa said the words that changed everything.

“If you don’t sign, I’ll tell Connor you refuse to cooperate with the family finances.”

A pause.

“He already thinks you spend too much.”

Amy beside me went completely still.

“I never said that.”

“I know.”

On the recording, Amy started crying.

Teresa continued.

“You should be grateful.”

Another voice entered.

Raymond.

The first direct evidence connecting him inside our house.

“Just sign the authorization page.”

Amy asked.

“Who are you?”

Teresa answered immediately.

“He helps me with investments.”

Then Raymond said something clear enough for every future jury to hear.

“Once we have the authorization, getting the equity later will be easier.”

Amy covered her mouth.

I replayed it.

Same sentence.

Same voice.

The old clue had been sitting in the nursery for months.

Frederick’s baby monitor had captured the beginning of the entire scheme.

Rachel nearly shouted when we sent it to her.

“This is what we needed.”

The audio proved Raymond knew the authorization was being obtained before any loan existed.

It supported coercion.

Planning.

And motive.

The next morning, prosecutors requested the financial records tied to Raymond and Teresa.

By afternoon, police found Raymond in Kentucky.

He was arrested on unrelated fraud warrants while investigators prepared additional charges.

For one hour, I believed the worst was over.

Then Rachel called again.

“Connor, Teresa has filed something.”

“What?”

“A petition for grandparent visitation.”

I laughed from disbelief.

“She threatened our child.”

“She claims she had nothing to do with that.”

“What else?”

Rachel paused.

“She also alleges Amy is isolating Frederick from extended family because of untreated emotional instability.”

Amy was standing beside me.

She heard every word.

For the first time during this entire nightmare, she didn’t cry.

She simply said.

“Good.”

I stared at her.

Amy’s eyes hardened.

May you like

“Let her say it in front of a judge.”
