Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

The click of the hospital room lock sounded louder than the security alarm had.

Daniel Ruiz stood between Margaret Whitmore and the doorway while one of his officers gently took Noah from her arms.

For the first time since she entered my room, Margaret looked uncertain.

“No one is taking my grandson anywhere,” she snapped.

Daniel did not raise his voice.

“That is exactly what we are making sure of.”

A nurse hurried to my bed and caught me as my knees weakened.

The warmth spreading beneath my surgical dressing had become impossible to ignore.

“Judge Carter, you need to lie down.”

“Take care of my babies first.”

Noah was returned to his bassinet beside Nora.

Only then did I allow the nurse to lower me onto the mattress.

Margaret stared at Daniel as though sheer outrage might force him to obey her.

“You don't understand who my family is.”

Daniel glanced at the private adoption agreement in his hand.

“I understand enough.”

He handed the document to another officer.

“Bag that.”

Margaret's face tightened.

“You have no right.”

Daniel's gaze shifted toward the red mark across my cheek.

“I have a patient reporting an assault, an infant removed from that patient's custody without permission, and documents that may contain forged signatures.”

He paused.

“That gives us plenty to work with.”

One of the nurses lifted my hospital gown enough to inspect the incision.

Her expression changed immediately.

“We need the obstetric team back in here.”

Margaret suddenly pointed at me.

“She attacked me first.”

No one moved.

“She is unstable,” Margaret continued.

“The anesthesia has confused her.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Preserve every hallway camera from this floor.”

Margaret went still.

“Preserve the elevator cameras, visitor logs, badge records, nursing notes, and every document she brought into this room.”

Daniel nodded.

“Already happening.”

That was when Margaret finally understood something important.

My title was not going to save me.

The evidence was.

And I knew exactly how to protect it.

A knock sounded at the locked door.

An officer checked the hallway camera.

Then he looked toward Daniel.

“It's Ethan Whitmore.”

My heart lurched.

Margaret's confidence returned almost instantly.

“My son will explain everything.”

Daniel opened the door.

Ethan rushed inside wearing the same blue sweater he had worn when he kissed my forehead before the emergency surgery.

He saw my swollen cheek.

He saw the blood on my lip.

Then he saw the papers spread across the room.

“What happened?”

Margaret hurried toward him.

“Ethan, thank God.”

She grabbed his arm.

“Tell them you authorized this.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Authorized what?”

Daniel held up the adoption agreement.

“Your mother says you signed permission to surrender your son's parental rights.”

The color drained from Ethan's face.

He stepped closer.

His eyes dropped to the signature.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then he whispered words that changed the direction of the entire investigation.

“That is my signature.”

I stopped breathing.

Ethan looked up at me.

“But I never signed that document.”
