Chapter 9 - MONDAY AT TEN THIRTY

We left the hotel before dawn.

Federal agents moved us to a secure residence owned by the state.

The building had reinforced doors, exterior cameras, and no public address.

Maisie’s location was restricted even within the investigative team.

Naomi stayed with us.

Tessa returned to the hospital under escort.

Evan was moved to another protected site after receiving threats from Samuel.

Margaret had now entered a federal building, a private residence, and a guarded hotel through deception or assistance.

No one believed ordinary precautions were enough.

Monday at ten thirty became a deadline without a known event.

The false dental appointment had originally been part of Margaret’s plan to remove Maisie from daycare.

Now the date might represent something else.

Investigators examined phone records, appointments, border traffic, and company schedules.

At nine fifteen, Daniel found a connection.

A private medical transport had been reserved under Thomas’s false identity.

The pickup location was his hospital.

The scheduled time was ten thirty.

The destination was listed as a rehabilitation facility in New Hampshire.

No such facility existed.

Margaret planned to take Thomas.

“Why warn us?” I asked.

“She may not have intended to warn us,” Daniel replied.

“The message about the dentist could have been a threat meant to divide attention.”

“She expected us to protect Maisie while someone removed Thomas.”

Tessa called the hospital.

A nurse answered from Thomas’s room.

He was safe.

Security surrounded the floor.

At ten twenty, a white medical transport van entered the hospital loading area.

Police stopped it.

The driver carried forged transfer orders signed by Dr. Keller.

He claimed he had received the job through an online service.

He did not know Margaret.

The van contained restraints, sedatives, and a second set of license plates.

The trap appeared to have failed.

Then the fire alarm sounded inside the hospital.

Margaret repeated the method she had used at Naomi’s apartment.

This time, however, investigators expected diversion.

The fire department responded while officers kept the exits secured.

No fire was found.

The alarm had been triggered manually on another floor.

Thomas remained in his room.

At ten thirty-five, Tessa called me.

“It is over,” she said.

“They caught the driver.”

“Did they find Margaret?”

“No.”

“Then it is not over.”

A child began crying somewhere near her.

Tessa stopped speaking.

“What is that?” I asked.

“I’m near the family lounge.”

The crying became clearer.

It sounded like Maisie.

I looked toward my daughter.

She was sitting safely on the carpet beside Naomi.

The sound on Tessa’s phone was a recording.

“Tessa, leave the hallway.”

A woman’s voice came through the phone.

“Walk toward the stairwell.”

It was Margaret.

“Tessa, do not move,” I said.

Margaret must have taken the phone or activated a nearby speaker.

The line remained open.

“If you want your father to remain alive,” Margaret continued, “come alone.”

Tessa’s breathing accelerated.

“She is inside the hospital,” she whispered.

Naomi contacted the command center through another phone.

Officers converged on the family lounge.

They found a small speaker hidden beneath a chair.

Margaret was not nearby.

The recorded instructions directed Tessa toward the stairwell, where a camera had been disabled.

Investigators believed Samuel intended to abduct her during the confusion.

The hospital was locked down.

Every room was searched.

Samuel was discovered wearing maintenance clothing inside a utility closet.

He carried zip ties, a syringe, and forged credentials.

He was arrested without resistance.

Margaret was not with him.

Samuel refused to answer questions.

His arrest should have weakened her.

Instead, it made me more afraid.

Samuel had been the planner.

Margaret was now operating alone.

People like her became unpredictable when control narrowed.

At noon, prosecutors announced Samuel’s arrest.

His photograph appeared across every major news station.

Margaret’s photograph remained beside the word WANTED.

Investigators believed she had used several false identities.

The offshore accounts gave her access to cash.

She could remain hidden for months.

Then Samuel requested a deal.

He offered to reveal Margaret’s location in exchange for reduced charges.

Prosecutors agreed only to listen.

Samuel claimed Margaret intended to leave the country through a private marina.

A boat waited near Rhode Island.

He provided a dock number and departure time.

Agents surrounded the marina.

The boat arrived.

The captain was arrested.

Margaret was not aboard.

The captain said Samuel hired him weeks earlier but canceled the trip that morning.

Samuel had offered outdated information.

He was testing whether prosecutors would negotiate.

“Can they charge him for lying?” I asked.

“They can add it to a very long list,” Naomi said.

Evan called from his protected location.

He sounded calmer than before.

“I know where Mom goes when she believes everyone has betrayed her,” he said.

“Where?”

“There is an abandoned church outside Litchfield.”

“Our grandfather funded it.”

“Mom kept the property after the congregation moved.”

“Why would she go there?”

“She used to take me there after Dad disappeared.”

“She said it was the only place people understood sacrifice.”

“Did you tell investigators?”

“Yes.”

Agents searched the church.

They found food, cash, clothing, and maps.

Margaret had been there recently.

On the altar sat a framed photograph of Maisie.

Beside it was a handwritten note addressed to Evan.

You chose Claire over your mother.

Now choose whether your father or your daughter deserves to survive the consequences.

The threat was reported immediately.

Thomas’s security increased.

Maisie remained hidden.

Evan asked to speak to me through a secure video call.

“I need to tell you something,” he said.

“Tell me.”

“Mom installed tracking software on our family phones.”

“Investigators checked mine.”

“She did not use an application.”

“She used the Hale company’s employee security system.”

“She registered our phone numbers as corporate devices.”

“Can she track my phone now?”

“Not if you changed it.”

“I have a temporary phone.”

“What about Tessa?”

“Her phone was replaced.”

“What are you not saying?”

Evan looked toward someone outside the camera.

Then he returned his attention to me.

“Maisie’s stuffed rabbit.”

I looked at the toy beside her.

“What about it?”

“Mom gave it to her last Christmas.”

“She said it had a sound module.”

I picked it up.

The rabbit felt heavier than an ordinary toy.

An investigator carefully opened a seam beneath the fabric.

Inside was a small tracking device.

It remained active.

Margaret had been able to follow Maisie from the dinner to the hospital, Naomi’s apartment, and the hotel.

The secure residence had now been exposed.

We were moved again.

Agents left the rabbit transmitting at the property.

A tactical team waited.

At eight that evening, a vehicle stopped two blocks away.

A woman wearing a hood approached through the trees.

Agents surrounded her.

She raised both hands.

It was not Margaret.

It was Judith.

She claimed Margaret had called and ordered her to retrieve the rabbit.

Judith believed cooperating would help authorities catch her sister.

No one had authorized the plan.

“Where is Margaret?” an agent asked.

“I don’t know.”

“What did she promise you?”

“She said she would tell Tessa the truth.”

“Tessa already knows.”

Judith began crying.

“She said there was more.”

“What more?”

Judith looked toward me.

“Margaret says Maisie is not Evan’s biological daughter.”

The statement was absurd.

I had never been unfaithful.

Evan had been present through the pregnancy and birth.

“She is lying,” I said.

Judith handed the agent an envelope.

“Margaret told me to leave this inside the rabbit.”

The envelope contained a laboratory report.

It claimed a DNA test excluded Evan as Maisie’s father.

The report bore the name of a legitimate laboratory.

Naomi examined the date.

The sample had supposedly been collected when Maisie was six months old.

I had never authorized a test.

Evan later admitted Margaret had asked to keep Maisie overnight that week.

The report could have been forged.

It could also have used samples obtained without permission.

A second test was arranged through a court-approved laboratory.
