Chapter 6 - THE VIDEO

Rebecca watched the livestream with me the next morning.
I wanted to look away.
I forced myself not to.
There was Maisie.
Yellow socks.
White booster seat.
Tiny spoon in her hand.
The video had begun almost forty minutes before the slap.
That mattered.
It showed the mood in the room.
Margaret correcting me.
Margaret criticizing Maisie for touching her food.
Margaret telling Evan I was “raising a princess.”
It showed me trying to redirect the conversation.
It showed Evan laughing weakly.
Then came the soup.
Maisie reached for bread.
Her elbow struck the bowl.
The bowl tipped.
Soup spilled across the table.
Margaret shot to her feet.
“For God’s sake.”
Maisie startled.
Her hands flew upward.
Margaret grabbed her beneath the arms.
I stood.
Then the slap came.
Even knowing it was coming did not prepare me.
I heard my daughter scream through the laptop speakers.
Rebecca paused the video.
“You want a minute?”
“No.”
We continued.
Evan’s silence was worse on video.
He looked directly at his daughter.
Then deliberately lowered his eyes.
The recording captured me calling his name.
It captured him saying Margaret had lost her temper.
It captured my three slaps.
Rebecca stopped the recording again.
“That is going to be a problem.”
“I know.”
“You cannot frame your actions as justified.”
“I’m not.”
That seemed to surprise her.
“I wish I hadn’t hit him.”
I looked at the frozen image of Evan holding his cheek.
“But I also wish he had stood up before I reached him.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Both things can be true.”
Then she resumed the recording.
We watched Margaret threaten me as I left.
We watched Tessa refuse to surrender the phone.
Then something happened that I had not heard that night.
After the front door closed behind me, the livestream continued for another three minutes.
Margaret turned on Evan.
“Fix this.”
Evan looked shaken.
“How?”
“You’re her husband.”
“She just left.”
“Then bring her back.”
“What if she won’t come?”
Margaret’s answer made Rebecca lean closer to the screen.
“Then we use what we prepared.”
Evan looked toward the remaining guests.
“Mom.”
Margaret lowered her voice.
But the microphone caught it.
“You signed the statement for a reason.”
I stopped breathing.
Rebecca rewound the clip.
We listened again.
You signed the statement for a reason.
“What statement?” I whispered.
Rebecca did not answer.
She was already taking notes.
Then Tessa appeared on screen.
“What statement?”
Margaret turned sharply.
The video ended five seconds later.
Rebecca closed the laptop.
“That is what we find next.”
I looked at her.
“And if the statement says what I think it says?”
Rebecca folded her hands.
May you like
“Then your marriage may have been preparing for a custody battle before you knew you were in one.”
