Chapter 16 - BROOKE’S TWO DAYS IN THE BASEMENT

Brooke denied the basement story at first.
She said Jason was confused.
There had been no locked door.
No camera.
No two-day confinement.
Then Rebecca mentioned the recording.
Brooke’s face collapsed.
Diane had taken Brooke to a family-owned house in Lake Geneva after she tried to contact Robert.
She locked her inside a finished basement with a mattress, bottled water, and a video camera.
Every few hours, Diane came downstairs and told Brooke that Robert had chosen a new family.
She ordered Brooke to speak into the camera.
Say he abandoned you.
Say he never loved you.
Say you want him to stay away.
Brooke refused until Diane threatened to send Jason away too.
Then fourteen-year-old Brooke obeyed.
The recording had been used to keep her silent for more than twenty years.
“She said she would show it to everyone,” Brooke whispered.
“It makes me look pathetic.”
“You were a child,” I said.
“I still helped her hurt you.”
“Yes.”
She flinched.
I did not pretend forgiveness had already happened.
Truth did not erase responsibility.
It only explained the shape of the damage.
Police located the Lake Geneva property.
It had been sold years earlier.
But Diane’s storage records included a second unit in Wisconsin.
Investigators found old videotapes inside a locked cabinet.
One was labeled BROOKE - AGE 14.
Another was labeled JASON - FATHER.
The prosecutor allowed Robert and Brooke to view the recordings privately.
They entered the room as strangers.
They came out holding hands.
Robert’s face was wet with tears.
Brooke could barely stand.
“He never left me,” she said.
“No,” I answered.
“He never did.”
That evening, Brooke released a public statement.
She admitted lying about the birthday attack.
She acknowledged leaking Lily’s records and helping Diane create false accusations.
She apologized to me, Lily, Mason, Robert, and everyone misled by the livestream narrative.
The same gossip site that had called me violent published a correction.
Comments shifted overnight.
I did not read them.
Strangers’ approval could not heal my daughter.
Diane’s criminal trial was scheduled for spring.
Our divorce hearing came first.
Jason agreed to give me primary legal and physical custody.
He surrendered the condo and restored the money he had moved.
The only contested issue was Diane’s access if she avoided prison.
Her attorney demanded future grandparent visitation.
Rebecca almost laughed.
Then the court received an anonymous package.
Inside was a new recording.
It showed me striking Jason three times.
The video had been edited to remove Diane hitting Lily.
It began with me crossing the dining room.
It ended with Diane falling into the table.
The package included a letter claiming the original livestream had been manipulated.
The handwriting expert identified the letter as mine.

Someone had forged my writing perfectly.
And the envelope carried my fingerprints.
