Chapter 13 - THE CONTROL CLAUSE

Reed found the clause at three in the morning.

It was buried inside a thirty-eight-page amendment Anna’s father had signed years earlier.

If Lily’s primary guardian became legally incapacitated or lost custody, management authority would transfer temporarily to a designated family representative.

That person was Evelyn.

But there was another condition.

The representative gained voting control over shares held inside the trust.

Shares in Hart Biomedical.

The company founded by Anna’s father.

Those shares had once been worth very little.

Now they were worth nearly eighteen million dollars.

I stared at Reed.

“Lily’s trust isn’t worth three million.”

“Not anymore.”

He turned the screen.

“The liquid assets are approximately two million after the theft.”

“The equity holdings are worth significantly more.”

Evelyn had not been risking Lily’s life for three million dollars.

She had been doing it for control of a company.

Hart Biomedical was preparing for a merger.

If Evelyn gained temporary voting authority before the transaction, she could influence the board and potentially earn millions.

Everything suddenly became clearer.

The rushed custody petition.

The public medical emergency.

The attempt to label me unstable.

The timing.

The merger vote was scheduled in four days.

Evelyn did not need permanent custody immediately.

She only needed emergency control long enough to vote Lily’s shares.

“Can the vote be stopped?” I asked.

Reed nodded.

“With a court order.”

Detective Collins added, “Which we are requesting this morning.”

The emergency hearing began at eleven.

Evelyn appeared by video from detention.

Robert was absent.

Michael was still missing.

The judge reviewed the smartwatch recording.

The recovered injector.

The whiteboard.

The financial transfers.

Then Evelyn’s replacement attorney argued that the evidence had not yet been fully tested.

For forty minutes, I listened while strangers debated whether I deserved to remain Lily’s father.

Then the judge looked directly at me.

“Mr. Mercer, until this investigation is resolved, you remain Lily’s sole legal guardian and trustee.”

I closed my eyes.

The judge continued.

“Evelyn Hart is prohibited from contacting Lily.”

“Her authority under the trust is suspended.”

“And all voting rights connected to Lily’s shares are frozen.”

For the first time in days, I breathed.

Then Collins’ phone vibrated.

She read the message.

Her expression changed.

Robert Sloan had been found.

Not arrested.

Found.

He had checked himself into a private clinic under another name.

And he was asking to speak with police.

May you like

There was one condition.

He would talk only if they protected him from Michael.
