Chapter 3: The Price of Greed

"Stay here, lock the door, and call the police," Julian commanded, kissing Clara's forehead. He turned to Maria. "Watch her with your life."

Julian ran downstairs just as the front glass doors shattered. Two men in tactical gear stepped through, followed by Victoria. She looked like a woman possessed, her hair slightly disheveled, a manic glint in her eyes.

"Where is she, Julian?" Victoria demanded, walking over the shattered glass. "Give me the signed papers, or give me the girl. If the Sterling name goes down, we all go down!"

"The Sterling name died the moment you put your hands on my wife," Julian said, standing at the bottom of the grand staircase, blocking their path.

"Move him," Victoria ordered her hired muscle coldly.

One of the men lunged forward, but Julian, fueled by pure adrenaline and fury, ducked the punch and tackled the man into a glass display cabinet. The second man drew a baton, striking Julian across the shoulder. Julian collapsed to one knee, gasping for air.

Victoria walked past her son, stepping onto the first stair. "You always were too soft, Julian. Just like your father."

Click.

The sound of a safety turning off echoed from the top of the stairs. Victoria froze.

Clara stood there. Her legs were shaking, clinging to the wooden banister for support, but her hands were steady as she aimed Julian’s old hunting shotgun straight at Victoria's chest. Maria stood right behind her, holding her up.

"One more step, Victoria," Clara said, her voice no longer trembling. It was as cold and sharp as a winter night. "And I'll give you exactly what you deserve."

Victoria stared up, her face paling. For the first time, she saw no fear in the girl she had tortured. She saw a survivor.

In that tense silence, the distant wail of police sirens pierced the night, rapidly growing louder. Red and blue lights began flashing through the broken windows, painting the walls of the Sterling manor in the colors of justice.

Victoria looked at Clara, then down at Julian, who was standing up, holding the flash drive in his hand. She realized, with sickening certainty, that she had lost everything.

Epilogue

Three months later, the Sterling manor was sold, its dark history washed away under a new name.

Victoria Sterling was sentenced to twenty years without parole for attempted murder, extortion, and domestic abuse, her fall from grace a front-page scandal across the country.

On a quiet beach in California, far away from the cold aristocracy of the East Coast, Julian and Clara sat on the porch of a small, sunlit cottage. The bruises had faded, replaced by the healthy glow of the ocean breeze. Clara took a sip of fresh orange juice, her hand steady, a genuine smile gracing her lips as Julian wrapped a blanket around her shoulders. They were finally free.
