Chapter 1: The Secret Clause

The ballroom was completely silent.

Two hundred guests stood frozen, their phones still pointed toward Victoria.

The same people who had laughed at my sweater moments ago were now watching my niece lose her confidence.

I held the phone in my hand.

The family attorney’s voice echoed through the room.

“Ms. Bennett, do you want to activate the conduct clause?”

Victoria stared at me.

Her confident smile was gone.

“What are you talking about?” she asked.

I looked at her calmly.

“Your father knew money could change people, Victoria.”

She shook her head.

“No. That’s impossible.”

I reached into my purse and pulled out an old document.

The attorney continued speaking.

“Your father’s trust fund was never unconditional. He created one final requirement before his daughter received full access.”

The guests listened carefully.

Victoria’s face turned pale.

“What requirement?”

I looked at her.

“Character.”

The room went completely quiet.

“Your father wrote that wealth should never reward cruelty, disrespect, or arrogance.”

Victoria laughed nervously.

“You’re lying.”

I opened the document.

It contained her father’s signature.

The same man who had raised her.

The same man who loved her more than anything.

“He left instructions,” I said softly. “If you ever humiliated someone because of their appearance, treated people as less than you, or used money to hurt others…”

I paused.

“…the trust would be frozen.”

Victoria’s eyes widened.

The diamond bracelet on her wrist suddenly looked meaningless.

“You can’t do this.”

I shook my head.

“I’m not doing this.”

I looked at the document.

“Your father did.”

For the first time that night, Victoria looked afraid.

May you like

Not because she might lose money.

But because she realized her father had seen the person she could become.
