Chapter 3: The Truth Finally Costs Something

Two months later, the courtroom was packed.

Only this time...

Richard Bennett wasn't standing beside the judge as the celebrated attorney.

He sat behind his son.

Powerless.

Every excuse sounded smaller under oath.

Preston claimed stress.

He blamed alcohol.

He blamed embarrassment.

Then he blamed me.

"If Evelyn hadn't challenged me—"

The prosecutor interrupted.

"You planted your own phone."

Silence.

"You assaulted an eight-year-old."

Silence.

"You lied to two hundred witnesses."

Silence.

"You continued lying after watching paramedics treat your niece."

The prosecutor stepped closer.

"What exactly did your sister do that forced you to commit those crimes?"

Preston couldn't answer.

Because there wasn't one.

The jury needed less than three hours.

Guilty.

On every count.

As deputies led him away in handcuffs, he looked toward our parents.

For perhaps the first time in his life...

Nobody rescued him.

Richard Bennett resigned from his law firm the following week.

Several disciplinary investigations followed.

Carolyn stopped attending charity events after videos surfaced showing her defending Preston while Sophie bled in my arms.

Their perfect family portrait no longer existed.

Neither did the illusion.
