Chapter 15 - THE HEARING
The emergency trust hearing took place while I was still under medical observation.
I appeared remotely.
My father’s attorneys argued that Grandma Eleanor had been confused when she amended the trust.
They claimed Margaret manipulated her.
They claimed Ethan manipulated me.
They claimed I was emotionally unstable because of my pregnancy.
The judge listened without expression.
Then Lauren testified.
My sister looked directly into the camera.
“Yes.”
“My parents told me Hannah’s baby would take the company.”
“Yes.”
“My mother gave Hannah the vitamins.”
“Yes.”
“I knew they wanted Hannah to sign the waiver.”
The opposing attorney stood.
“Did anyone specifically order you to kick your sister?”
Lauren paused.
“No.”
That answer hurt more than I expected.
Because it meant Lauren still owned that choice.
Nobody controlled her leg.
Nobody forced her to look into my eyes.
She chose.
Then Ethan testified.
My father’s attorney attacked him immediately.
“You met Robert Mercer secretly.”
“Yes.”
“You concealed those meetings from your wife.”
“Yes.”
“You asked questions about the trust before Hannah knew about it.”
“Yes.”
Every answer made Ethan look worse.
Then Margaret played the recordings.
My father offering money.
My father saying everything became permanent after the birth.
My father suggesting that a natural tragedy would solve the problem.
The courtroom became silent.
Finally, the judge ruled.
The freeze remained.
An independent trustee would take temporary control.
All company voting rights connected to disputed trust assets were suspended.
My father’s control ended that afternoon.
It was the first real victory.
But victories have consequences.
At 11:40 that night, someone broke into Margaret Shaw’s office.
They ignored computers.
Ignored cash.
Ignored artwork.
