PART 2: The Witnesses Speak

The restaurant remained silent except for Maya's uneven breathing.
David slowly took one step backward, forcing an awkward laugh.
"She's my wife," he said loudly. "This is a family disagreement. Everyone is overreacting."
No one believed him.
Not anymore.
The manager, Thomas Reynolds, walked forward with two security employees behind him.
"Sir," Thomas said firmly, "you need to remain exactly where you are until the police arrive."
Rebecca rose from her chair so abruptly that her pearls rattled against her neck.
"This is ridiculous!" she snapped. "Do you know who my family is?"
Thomas never blinked.
"I don't care."
Rebecca pointed at Elena.
"She provoked this! She's destroying her own daughter's marriage!"
Elena ignored her.
Instead, she wrapped both hands around Maya's trembling shoulders.
"Maya," she whispered, "look at me."
Slowly...
Her daughter lifted tear-filled eyes.
For the first time in years, Elena noticed something heartbreaking.
Maya wasn't only frightened.
She looked relieved.
As though someone had finally stepped between her and the nightmare.
Within minutes, blue and red lights flashed through the restaurant windows.
Two Boston police officers entered first.
Behind them came Sergeant Daniel Brooks.
His calm expression disappeared the moment he saw Maya's swollen scalp and strands of hair scattered across the hardwood floor.
"Who called 911?"
"I did," Elena answered.
David immediately stepped forward.
"Officer, this has been exaggerated."
Daniel raised one hand.
"You'll have your chance."
He turned toward Maya.
"Ma'am... would you like to tell me what happened?"
Maya opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
David stared directly at her.
Not speaking...
Threatening.
Sergeant Brooks noticed immediately.
"Sir," he said coldly, "step away from your wife."
David hesitated.
"I said now."
The officer's tone left no room for debate.
Only after David was several feet away did Maya finally whisper,
"He grabbed my hair."
The restaurant became even quieter.
Daniel continued gently.
"Has this happened before?"
Maya looked toward the table.
Rebecca glared at her.
David silently shook his head.
A warning.
Then Maya closed her eyes.
"...Yes."
One word.
One tiny word.
But it shattered the perfect image David had spent years building.
Then something unexpected happened.
A young waitress raised her hand.
"I saw everything."
Another customer stood.
"So did I."
Then another.
"And me."
Within seconds nearly twenty diners volunteered to give statements.
One elderly couple even produced cellphone footage.
One video clearly showed David grabbing Maya by the hair before anyone spoke.
Another captured Rebecca clapping proudly.
David's face lost every trace of color.
Sergeant Brooks looked at him.
"Mr. Vance..."
He turned him around.
"...place your hands behind your back."
The handcuffs clicked loudly.
Rebecca screamed.
"You can't arrest my son over a marital argument!"
Daniel looked directly into her eyes.
May you like
"No, ma'am."
"We're arresting him for assault."
