Chapter 18 - THE BOARDROOM

At nine the next morning, twelve directors sat around the Whitmore Holdings boardroom.
They expected Ethan.
They expected Eleanor.
They expected lawyers.
They did not expect Claire Bennett.
The chairman pro tempore, Malcolm Pierce, looked annoyed.
“This is a private meeting.”
Claire placed a folder on the table.
“I know.”
“You are not a director.”
“Not yet.”
Malcolm turned toward Ethan.
“What is this?”
Ethan sat beside Claire.
“The truth.”
Claire distributed copies of Jonathan’s original trust.
Silence spread around the table.
Malcolm read the first page.
His face changed.
“This cannot be valid.”
Claire’s attorney spoke.
“It was authenticated this morning.”
Another director stood.
“Jonathan’s voting shares reverted to the board.”
“No.”
Claire said.
“They reverted to me.”
Malcolm looked at Eleanor.
“Did you know about this?”
Eleanor shook her head.
Claire slid another file forward.
“This folder contains records connecting six current directors to Project Cedar settlements.”
Three men immediately stopped reading.
Claire watched them.
“You can resign today.”
“Or federal investigators can review every payment.”
Malcolm glared at her.
“This is extortion.”
“No.”
Claire folded her hands.
“This is governance.”
The boardroom doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
Malcolm’s confidence disappeared.
One director tried to leave through the side door.
An agent stopped him.
Claire turned toward the remaining members.
“Whitmore Holdings will establish an independent restitution fund for every patient harmed by Project Cedar.”
“We will release the internal records.”
“We will cooperate with investigators.”
“And we will stop pretending this company’s reputation matters more than the people it hurt.”
Malcolm laughed bitterly.
“You think shareholders will accept this?”
Claire looked at him.
“They don’t have to.”
She placed her voting proxy on the table.
“I control fifty-one percent.”
Malcolm went silent.
Ethan smiled for the first time in days.
Claire turned toward Eleanor.
“And effective immediately, Eleanor Whitmore is removed from every corporate position.”
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
She did not protest.
Then Claire added.
“But she will testify.”
Eleanor looked at her.
Claire’s voice was steady.

“You get the chance to earn whatever comes after it.”
