CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

The ballroom had never been so quiet.

Henry looked down at his son.

Noah was still reaching toward Grace, his tiny body shaking with sobs.

"I want Mommy..."

The words echoed through the hall.

Vivian tightened her grip on the child.

"He's confused," she said quickly, forcing a laugh. "Children become attached to nannies all the time."

Grace slowly stood, rubbing her bruised knee.

"I'm not his nanny."

The sentence landed like shattered glass.

Henry frowned.

"What did you say?"

Grace looked at Noah before answering.

"I said... I have never been his nanny."

Vivian stepped forward.

"Enough."

She turned toward the security staff.

"Remove her."

Before anyone could move, Noah broke free from Vivian's hand and ran back to Grace.

He wrapped both arms around her legs.

"No!"

He was crying so hard he could barely breathe.

"Don't take my mommy away!"

Several guests exchanged uneasy glances.

One elderly woman whispered, "A child that young doesn't invent something like that."

Henry slowly walked toward Grace.

His voice had become dangerously calm.

"Tell me the truth."

Grace closed her eyes.

"I signed a confidentiality agreement."

Vivian's face lost all color.

Henry noticed immediately.

"What agreement?"

Grace looked directly at him.

"The one your father forced me to sign."

Every eye in the room turned toward the portrait of the late Charles Whitmore hanging above the grand staircase.

Grace took a slow breath.

"Three years ago, your wife died giving birth to Noah."

Henry nodded silently.

"You were destroyed by grief."

"I know."

"So your father hired me."

Henry frowned.

"As a nanny?"

Grace shook her head.

"As a surrogate caregiver."

She looked down at Noah.

"He needed constant physical comfort."

"He wouldn't eat."

"He wouldn't sleep."

"He cried every hour of every night."

"The doctors recommended one consistent caregiver."

"I moved into this house."

"I fed him."

"I held him through every nightmare."

"I was the one who rocked him to sleep every night for nearly three years."

Tears filled Grace's eyes.

"I never tried to replace his mother."

"I simply loved a little boy who had lost his."

Henry looked at Noah clinging desperately to Grace.

Suddenly...

Everything made sense.

The way Noah always searched for Grace first.

The way he cried whenever she left the room.

The way he became frightened around Vivian after she repeatedly ordered Grace away.

This wasn't confusion.

This was attachment built over thousands of quiet moments no one else had noticed.
