CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE THAT COST TWO MILLION DOLLARS

The moment Eleanor Mercer reached them, all the color had drained from her face.

"Damien," she said sharply, gripping his arm. "We're leaving."

He didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on Ethan and Noah.

"They're... five?" he asked quietly.

Neither Mara nor the boys answered.

Eleanor forced a smile toward the twins.

"What lovely children."

Then she looked directly at Mara.

"We need to talk."

"I don't."

Eleanor lowered her voice.

"You still have the agreement."

Mara's expression never changed.

"The agreement? No."

She paused.

"I have the truth."

Damien frowned.

"What agreement?"

Neither woman answered.

Instead, Mara opened her handbag and removed a worn manila envelope.

The same envelope she had refused to open for years after leaving.

She handed it to Damien.

His hands trembled.

Inside was the contract his mother had arranged.

Two million dollars.

In exchange for complete silence.

Permanent confidentiality.

No future legal claims.

No contact with the Mercer family.

Attached was a second document Damien had never seen.

A letter signed by Eleanor Mercer.

"My son will never know this child exists."

"You will disappear permanently."

"If necessary, we will ensure the pregnancy becomes legally impossible to prove."

Damien looked up in horror.

"...Mother?"

Eleanor's composure shattered.

"I was protecting you."

"No."

His voice cracked.

"You were controlling my life."

Mara finally spoke.

"You always believed Damien abandoned us because he didn't care."

She looked at Damien.

"But you deserve to know the whole truth."

"I never received another call after that day."

Damien stared.

"What?"

"I changed my number because your mother's lawyers followed me."

"I thought..."

His words caught in his throat.

"I thought you accepted the money."

"I never touched a single dollar."

She pulled another document from the envelope.

The untouched cashier's check.

Expired.

Void.

Still sealed.

For five years.

Damien felt his knees weaken.

May you like

Everything he believed...

Had been built on a lie.
