CHAPTER 18 THE ANNIVERSARY MEETING

THE ANNIVERSARY MEETING
The meeting took place at 11:30 a.m. in a conference room inside the state attorney general's regional office.
Richard objected to the location.
Leah told him the alternative was no meeting.
He came anyway.
He arrived with one lawyer, two boxes of documents, and the same navy suit he had worn on Easter Sunday.
There was a brown stain near the cuff.
I wondered if it came from the white rug.
I hated that I wondered.
Lily entered from another door.
She wore jeans, the red sweater, and no makeup.
Her bandage was visible.
Richard looked at it first.
Then he looked away.
Mara watched through the observation glass with me.
Leah sat beside Lily.
A state investigator sat in the corner.
Richard's lawyer, Victor Dane, sat beside him.
The meeting was voluntary.
It was recorded with everyone's knowledge.
Richard had asked for immunity.
He had not received it.
He came anyway because Malcolm frightened him more than the state did.
That fact alone told me the family was finally breaking from the inside.
Richard stared at Lily for several seconds.
"You look tired."
Lily said, "Do not comment on my condition."
He blinked.
"I was being nice."
"No."
"Lily."
"You spent months turning descriptions of my condition into weapons. You do not get to describe me today."
Leah did not interrupt.
Richard looked at his lawyer.
Dane said quietly, "Proceed with the documents."
Richard opened the first box.
"These are trust records."
Lily did not touch them.
The investigator did.
He logged each folder.
Richard opened a second folder.
"Payments from Dad to Weller."
Another.
"Payments to Benton."
Another.
"Charles Vale's consulting agreements."
Another.
"Copies of the emergency directives."
Lily looked at him.
"You kept copies."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Insurance."
The family word.
Insurance did not mean safety in the Ashford world.
It meant evidence stored for use against someone you claimed to love.
Lily said, "Who were you planning to use them against?"
Richard hesitated.
"Dad, if I needed to."
"Not me?"
"No."
She stared at him.
"That is almost worse."
"Why?"
"Because you knew they were wrong enough to blackmail him with, but not wrong enough to stop doing them to me."
Richard's face tightened.
"I told you, I was trying to keep you alive."
"When did you learn about the crash?"
"January."
"This January?"
"Yes."
"How long had you been taking my keys by then?"
He looked away.
"A while."
"How long had you been controlling my bank password?"
"That is not relevant."
"It is to me."
Leah said, "Answer if you want the meeting to continue."
Richard rubbed his hands together.
"A year, maybe."
"How long had Weller been documenting fake episodes?"
"I did not know they were fake."
Lily gave him a flat look.
"How long?"
"Eighteen months."
"So for a year before you knew about any crash, you were already doing those things."
Richard's mouth tightened.
"Dad said it was necessary."
"To save me?"
Silence.
"No."
Lily leaned back.
"You were not protecting me from the crash when you took my keys the first time."
"No."
"You were not protecting me when you changed my banking password."
"No."
"You were not protecting me when you lied to my father about me being unstable."
Richard said nothing.
"You were not protecting me when you held me in the blue room."
His eyes filled.
"I thought Weller was helping."
"Did you tell him to make the camera disappear?"
He froze.
The clinic video had captured that sentence.
Lily continued.
"Did you tell him?"
"Yes."
"Why hide help?"
Richard looked at the table.
"Because I knew you would be angry."
"At treatment?"
"At how we got you there."
"How did you get me there?"
He swallowed.
"You were sedated."
"By who?"
"Weller."
"Before the clinic?"
"At the house."
Lily's hands went still.
This was new.
"How?"
Richard looked at his lawyer.
Dane spoke softly.
"You may decline to answer."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"And then Dad says I did everything."
He looked at Lily.
"It was in tea."
My jaw tightened.
Mara touched my sleeve through the observation room.
Stay here.
Lily's face was white.
"Who put it in the tea?"
Richard whispered, "Mom."
For a moment I thought he meant Lily's mother.
Then I understood.
Evelyn Ashford.
Lily blinked.
"Evelyn drugged me."
"She said Weller told her the dose was safe."
"Did you know?"
"Yes."
"Did you stop her?"
"No."
"Did you drink the tea?"
"No."
Lily nodded slowly.
"Then you knew exactly what was happening."
Richard started crying again.
"I was trying to keep Dad calm."
Lily stared at him.
"You keep describing your fear of him as a reason I had to suffer."
He had no answer.
She asked about the fake suicide note.
Richard admitted he provided old letters so Weller could imitate her handwriting.
He claimed he believed the note would only support temporary treatment.
She asked about the edited interview accusing me.
He admitted he gave Weller childhood details from Simon's profile.
He claimed Benton and Weller performed the edit.
She asked whether he watched the final version.
He said yes.
She asked whether he told anyone it was false.
He said no.
She asked whether he planned to use it against me if I tried to help her.
He whispered, "If I had to."
I closed my eyes.
Mara said quietly, "Stay in the room."
"I am."
"Your face is not."
I almost laughed.
Lily did not.
She kept going.
"The insurance policy."
Richard's lawyer shifted.
Richard said, "Dad handled it."
"My signature is on it."
"Digital."
"Who controlled the certificate?"
He looked down.
"Me."
"So when you say Dad handled it, you mean Dad told you what to do and you used my identity to do it."
"Yes."
"The partnership transfer this morning."
Richard looked surprised.
"What transfer?"
Lily watched him carefully.
"You don't know?"
"No."
"Someone used the certificate you controlled to transfer my units back to the family trust."
Richard's face changed.
"I didn't."
Dane leaned toward him.
"Do not speculate."
Richard ignored his lawyer.
"I swear I didn't."
Lily looked at Leah.
Leah wrote something down.
Richard continued.
"Dad had the backup credential."
Leah looked up.
"Explain."
"When the certificate was created, Grant set Dad as recovery administrator."
"Grant said Richard controlled it."
"Richard did for normal access."
"And Malcolm?"
"Could reset it."
The fraudulent transfer had Malcolm's fingerprints without touching a pen.
Lily looked at Richard.
"You gave your father the power to become me."
"I didn't think of it like that."
"That is the problem with you."
"What?"
"You never think of what something is when it happens to me. You think of what you meant when you did it."
Richard stared at her.
She continued.
"You took my phone because you meant to calm me down."
"Lily."
"You took my keys because you meant to keep me safe."
"Stop."
"You drugged me because you meant to help me."
"Stop."
"You forged me because you meant to manage things."
"Stop."
"You threatened my father because you meant to save our marriage."
Richard slammed his palm on the table.
The state investigator stood.
Lily did not move.
Richard stared at his hand as if it belonged to someone else.
Then he slowly lowered it.
"I'm sorry."
Lily's voice was quiet.
"I believe you are sorry now."
Hope flashed in his eyes.
She continued.
"That does not make me safe with you."
The hope vanished.
"Can you ever forgive me?"
Leah looked at Lily.
The question was not legal.
Lily answered anyway.
"Forgiveness is not access."
Richard's eyes filled.
"What does that mean?"
"It means even if I forgive you one day, you still do not get me back."
He looked destroyed.
I felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Richard opened the second box.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope.
"This is the continuity archive map."
Mara came into the conference room for the first time.
"Where did you get it?"
Richard flinched at her voice.
"Dad's study."
"Original?"
"Copy."
"Where is the archive?"
"Behind the wine cellar."
"How large?"
"I don't know."
"What is inside?"
"Everything Dad considered leverage."
"Black Harbor?"
"Yes."
"Weller records?"
"Yes."
"Benton?"
"Yes."
"Judges?"
"Yes."
"Your wife?"
Richard looked at Lily.
"Yes."
"Elias Mercer?"
Richard looked toward the observation glass.
He knew I was behind it.
"Yes."
Mara's expression hardened.
"Is Weller going there?"
"Dad told him to destroy patient files and move the old material."
"When?"
"This morning."
Mara turned to the state investigator.
"We need the warrant team updated now."
Richard's lawyer stood.
"My client has cooperated."
Mara looked at him.
"Your client has confessed to multiple felonies on a recorded line."
Dane's face tightened.
Richard looked at Lily.
"I came here."
She stared at him.
"Yes."
"That has to matter."
"It can matter without erasing anything."
Before Richard answered, Lily's temporary phone rang.
The screen showed EVELYN ASHFORD.
Everyone froze.
Leah nodded.
Lily answered on speaker.
"Hello?"
Evelyn's whisper came through.
"Lily."
Lily's face hardened.
"What do you want?"
"Help."
Richard stood.
"Mom?"
Evelyn heard him.
"Richard?"
"Where are you?"
"Your father's study."
Her breathing was ragged.
"He locked the doors."
Mara stepped closer to the phone.
"Mrs. Ashford, this is Mara Voss. Is Malcolm with you?"
"No."
"Are you injured?"
"My wrist."
"What happened?"
Evelyn began crying.
"He caught me copying files."
Richard stared at the phone.
"Mom, what files?"
"The patient videos."
Lily's face changed.
Evelyn continued.
"I found what Weller was going to do."
"To me?" Lily asked.
"Yes."
"When?"
"Last week."
Lily's voice went flat.
"And you still helped him drug me before."
Evelyn sobbed.
"I thought it was treatment."
"You held my arm on Easter."
"I know."
"You told me I was confused."
"I know."
"You watched Richard hurt me."
"I know."
There was no forgiveness in the room.
There was only information.
Mara asked, "Where is Malcolm now?"
"Downstairs."
"With Weller?"
"I think so."
"Can you get out?"
"No."
"Is there another exit from the study?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"There is something you need to know first."
Mara said, "Go ahead."
Evelyn's voice dropped.
"The archive is not behind the wine cellar."
Everyone looked at Richard.
He went pale.
"What?"
Evelyn continued.
"That room is a decoy."
Richard stared at the phone.
"Dad told me-"
"He lies to you too."
The sentence hit him visibly.
Mara asked, "Where is the real archive?"
Evelyn whispered, "Under the living room."
Lily gripped the table.
The white rug.
Evelyn continued.
"There is a floor panel beneath the rug where Lily was lying yesterday."
I felt the room shrink.
"How do you know?" Lily asked.
Evelyn cried harder.
"Because you were not the first woman they put there."
May you like
The line went dead.
