Chapter 17 - The Son Chooses

Richard denied following Jonathan.

Then Daniel produced expense records placing Richard’s driver near Greenwich that night.

The driver had died three years later.

There would be no easy confession.

No perfect answer.

But there was enough for investigators to reopen Jonathan Mercer’s death.

Richard Thorne was formally arrested before sunrise on conspiracy, financial fraud, obstruction, and charges related to the attack on Khloe.

More could follow.

Voss was arrested.

Daniel negotiated for cooperation.

Isabella was taken into custody for aggravated assault and conspiracy.

Khloe watched none of it.

She was too exhausted.

Marcus remained near the window of her hospital room until sunrise.

Finally, he spoke.

“I signed something.”

Khloe looked over.

He handed Gabriel a folder.

Inside were corporate transfer documents.

Marcus had voluntarily surrendered every temporary voting right connected to the Mercer trust.

Effective immediately.

Gabriel read the first page twice.

“You understand what this does?”

“Yes.”

“You lose control before the baby is born.”

“Yes.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

“Why?”

He met her eyes.

“Because I should never have controlled something that belonged to you.”

“That doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t save our marriage.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

“I know.”

“You cheated.”

“Yes.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You doubted our child.”

“Yes.”

“You ignored a threat because you were protecting yourself.”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

Khloe waited.

He did not offer an excuse.

That mattered.

But not enough.

Marcus removed his wedding ring.

He held it in his palm.

“I loved you badly.”

Khloe felt tears rise.

Marcus continued.

“I kept thinking loving you meant wanting you.”

“Keeping you.”

“Protecting the life I had with you.”

“But love without honesty became possession.”

“And every time the truth threatened to cost me something, I chose another lie.”

Khloe looked away.

Marcus placed the ring on the table.

“I won’t ask you to forgive me.”

“I won’t ask you to stay.”

“I will be our son’s father in whatever way you allow.”

“But I won’t use money, lawyers, or the company to trap you.”

For the first time that night, Khloe believed every word.

That did not mean she wanted him back.

She touched her stomach.

The baby moved.

A strong kick.

Khloe smiled through tears.

Marcus saw it.

His face broke.

“Is he moving?”

“Yes.”

Marcus did not approach.

Khloe appreciated that.

After several seconds, she whispered.

“His name is Jonathan.”

Marcus looked at her.

She had never agreed to the name before.

Now she was certain.

“Jonathan Gabriel Thorne.”

Gabriel turned away to hide his tears.

Marcus nodded.

“That’s a good name.”

Khloe looked at the sunrise beyond Manhattan.

For the first time in years, her future terrified her.

May you like

But it belonged to her.
