Chapter 1: A Mother's Voice

The scream cut through the orchestra like shattered glass.
Emily Parker dropped the champagne flute from her hand.
Crystal exploded across the polished marble floor.
She didn't care.
"Mia!"
Her six-year-old daughter stood trembling near the grand staircase, tears streaming down her cheeks.
One tiny pink shoe had slipped off.
Standing over her was Victoria Ashford, the elegant widow whose name appeared on hospitals, museums, and half the city's charitable foundations.
Victoria looked irritated rather than ashamed.
"I simply told someone else's child to leave," she said coolly. "This is an invitation-only gala."
Emily rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside Mia.
"My sweetheart... are you hurt?"
Mia threw her arms around her mother's neck.
"She said I don't belong here."
Emily's heart broke.
She slowly stood, brushing a strand of hair from Mia's face.
"My daughter belongs wherever I choose to bring her."
Victoria gave a dismissive laugh.
"A ballroom isn't a playground for children from ordinary families."
The surrounding guests lowered their eyes.
No one challenged Victoria.
No one ever did.
Until that night.
Emily reached into her evening clutch and quietly pressed a single button.
Across the ballroom, every giant display screen suddenly flickered.
Conversations stopped.
Victoria frowned.
"What are you doing?"
May you like
Emily met her gaze.
"Showing everyone who you really are."
