CHAPTER 3 — THE WOMAN WHO STOLE THE TRUTH

The following morning, detectives arrived at the mansion.

Not because of Amelia's injuries.

Because one of the longtime employees had finally decided to speak.

Margaret, the Whitfields' housekeeper for thirty years, placed an old leather journal on the dining room table.

"It belonged to Mr. Whitfield," she said.

"I've kept it hidden because he asked me to."

Inside were handwritten notes covering decades.

Business meetings.

Family events.

Personal regrets.

Then came one entry that stunned everyone.

"Eleanor burned every letter Richard Bennett ever sent us. She refuses to forgive a man who never betrayed us."

Another page followed.

"She believes Richard wanted our company. The truth is he refused ownership every single time."

Margaret quietly wiped away a tear.

"Your father wanted Caleb to know."

"But Eleanor destroyed every reminder."

Detective Harris closed the journal.

"So Mrs. Whitfield knowingly concealed documents connected to the family estate."

Margaret nodded.

"And she spent years convincing everyone that Amelia's family was the enemy."

When Eleanor was confronted, her confidence vanished.

"I did it for my family!"

"No," Caleb replied.

"You did it because you couldn't admit you were wrong."

At that moment another officer entered the room carrying a tablet.

"The security footage has been enhanced."

The video clearly showed Eleanor looking over both shoulders before placing both hands firmly against Amelia's back.

Then she shoved.

There was no accident.

No loss of balance.

Only anger.

Handcuffs clicked around Eleanor's wrists.

As she was led outside, she looked at Caleb.

"You would choose her over your own mother?"

May you like

He answered without hesitation.

"I chose the person who never stopped protecting this family."
