Chapter 13 - The Son Eleanor Chose

Ethan refused to believe it.

At least at first.

“My father was Thomas Ashford.”

Claire stood beside him.

“He raised you.”

“He was my father.”

“I know.”

“That’s the end of it.”

But it was not.

Victor sent a second photograph.

A laboratory report.

Dated thirty-six years earlier.

The name on top was Eleanor Ashford.

The test result indicated Thomas Ashford was excluded as the biological father of her newborn son.

Ethan stared at the page.

Claire watched his entire identity shift beneath him.

“No.”

He called Eleanor.

She refused to answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then he drove to the detention center.

Claire went with him.

Eleanor entered the interview room and saw the photograph.

She stopped.

Ethan held it against the glass.

“Tell me it’s fake.”

Eleanor did not sit.

“Tell me.”

Her eyes filled.

Ethan’s voice broke.

“Tell me Thomas was my father.”

Eleanor sat slowly.

“He was.”

“Biologically.”

Silence.

Ethan looked away.

Claire reached toward his arm.

He stepped back.

“Who?”

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

“Victor.”

The room became completely still.

Claire stopped breathing.

Ethan stared at her.

“No.”

Eleanor began crying.

Claire had never seen it happen.

Not polite tears.

Not carefully controlled emotion.

She broke.

“I was twenty-four.”

Ethan gripped the telephone.

“No.”

“Thomas and I were engaged.”

“Stop.”

“We had separated for three months.”

“Stop.”

“Victor was my friend too.”

Ethan slammed the receiver against the glass.

“Stop!”

A guard moved toward the door.

Claire raised a hand.

Ethan pressed both palms against the counter.

His breathing became ragged.

Eleanor continued despite his reaction.

“It happened once.”

“I told Thomas after you were born.”

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“And he stayed?”

“Yes.”

Ethan laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“So Victor is my biological father.”

“Yes.”

Claire finally understood the photograph from the hidden house.

The paternity file.

Victor’s obsession with Ethan.

His hatred of Thomas.

His determination to control Sophie.

It was not just revenge for Lily.

It was not just money.

Victor believed Ethan belonged to him too.

Eleanor leaned closer.

“Thomas never treated you differently.”

“Did Victor know?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Always.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“And he let me believe he was just the family lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Thomas demanded it.”

Ethan stared.

Eleanor continued.

“Victor wanted to tell you when you were eighteen.”

“Thomas threatened to remove him from the company.”

“Victor stayed silent.”

“Until?”

“Until you married Claire.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Why did that matter?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Because Victor realized your child would inherit the combined Ashford controlling interest.”

Claire slowly sat.

“He didn’t just want Sophie because of Lily.”

“No.”

“He wanted her because she was his biological granddaughter through Ethan.”

“Yes.”

Everything changed.

Victor had two secret children.

Lily with Ruth.

Ethan with Eleanor.

Both raised by other men or without him.

Both denied to him.

His entire adult life had been spent beside the families he believed stole his children.

Sophie connected both branches in his mind.

She was Ethan’s daughter.

She was raised as Lily’s daughter.

To Victor, she symbolically belonged to both children he had lost.

Claire felt sick.

“He thinks Sophie is his.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

Ethan turned away.

Claire followed him from the room.

He walked down the corridor without speaking.

Outside, he stopped beside the car.

Claire waited.

Then Ethan punched the side of the vehicle.

Once.

He stopped himself before doing it again.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire said nothing.

“He stood beside me at my wedding.”

“Yes.”

“He gave a speech.”

“Yes.”

“He held my shoulder at my father’s funeral.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“My whole life is someone else’s secret.”

Claire moved closer.

“Not all of it.”

“What part is real?”

“Sophie.”

He looked at her.

“Us.”

His expression changed.

Claire swallowed.

“What happened between us was real.”

“Even if everything around it was manipulated.”

Ethan stared at her for a long time.

“Do you still believe that?”

Claire thought about seven years.

The forged letter.

The stolen baby.

The lies.

“Yes.”

Ethan looked away quickly.

Quinn called twenty minutes later.

Victor had sent another message.

This time to Eleanor’s attorney.

He demanded that Eleanor publicly admit Ethan was his biological son.

Claire immediately understood why.

“He wants legitimacy.”

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“He wants the world to see Sophie as his granddaughter.”

Quinn nodded.

“And eventually justify his guardianship claim.”

“That’s insane.”

“Yes.”

“But public narrative matters.”

Victor released the paternity documents before Eleanor could respond.

The story exploded.

ETHAN ASHFORD NOT BIOLOGICAL SON OF LATE BILLIONAIRE THOMAS ASHFORD.

FUGITIVE LAWYER VICTOR HALE CLAIMED AS POSSIBLE FATHER.

ASHFORD SUCCESSION THROWN INTO CHAOS.

Claire watched reporters surround the manor gates.

Sophie saw one headline before Claire could turn off the television.

She stared at Ethan.

“Victor is your dad?”

Ethan knelt.

“Biologically.”

“Is that bad?”

He looked at Claire.

Then back at Sophie.

“No.”

“The bad things he did are his choices.”

“They are not mine.”

Sophie thought about that.

“Then you’re still my dad?”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“If you want me to be.”

Sophie frowned.

“That’s not how dads work.”

Claire almost laughed.

Sophie continued.

“You’re my dad even if I’m mad at you.”

Ethan covered his mouth.

Claire turned away to hide her tears.

Sophie hugged him.

For one quiet minute, Victor’s secret lost its power.

Then the front doorbell rang.

Quinn entered holding a sealed evidence bag.

“We found this in Victor’s hidden house.”

Inside was a birth certificate.

Not Ethan’s.

Lily Gray’s.

Under father, one name had originally been typed.

VICTOR MICHAEL HALE.

It had been crossed out.

Another document accompanied it.

A handwritten agreement.

Thomas Ashford had paid Victor $250,000 thirty-five years earlier.

In exchange, Victor agreed not to claim paternity rights to Lily.

Ruth’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Claire stared.

“So Thomas paid him to stay away from Lily.”

“Yes.”

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

“While raising Victor’s other child as his own.”

Quinn nodded.

The cruelty of the arrangement was almost impossible to comprehend.

Thomas had protected Ethan.

But he had also taken part in separating Victor from Lily.

Victor’s resentment had roots.

It did not excuse anything.

But it explained the depth of it.

Then Quinn produced a final document.

A note from Victor.

It had been written recently.

Only one sentence.

Thomas took my children, so I took his future.

Claire looked at Sophie.

Victor had never viewed her as a person caught in the middle.

She was the final move in a war that began before she was born.

And Claire realized something terrifying.

May you like

A man who believed a child was his stolen future would never stop trying to reclaim her.
