Chapter 3: Why Tonight?

Daniel's mother finally exploded.
"Emma!"
"After everything this family gave you!"
Emma slowly turned toward Evelyn.
"No."
She said gently.
"Let's tell the truth."
"You never gave me a family."
"You gave me a position."
"A woman who cooked."
"A woman who smiled."
"A woman who apologized."
"But never a daughter."
The room fell completely silent.
Emma looked toward the hallway.
On the wall hung dozens of family photographs.
Vacations.
Birthdays.
Anniversaries.
She appeared in every single one.
Always smiling.
Always standing slightly behind Daniel.
Never in the center.
Never quite belonging.
She took a slow breath.
"Do you know why I chose tonight?"
Nobody answered.
She pointed toward the framed photograph celebrating Daniel's promotion.
"Because today marks exactly twelve years since that picture was taken."
"The same night Daniel promised he would never lie to me again."
Jonathan quietly slid one final folder across the table.
It contained a timeline.
Every affair.
Every hidden account.
Every forged signature.
Every attempt to isolate Emma from her friends.
Every manipulation.
Beginning...
The very next morning after that promise.
Twelve years.
Exactly.
Emma smiled sadly.

"I wanted my marriage to end on the anniversary of the day it truly died."
Even Daniel couldn't argue with that.
