Chapter 2: The Woman They Mistook for Ordinary

The ballroom remained silent.

Three hundred guests watched as the venue manager respectfully held the leather portfolio open before Clara.

She accepted it without a trace of triumph.

Only quiet dignity.

Andrew looked between the ownership documents and the torn pieces of lace scattered across the marble floor.

"What... is this?"

The venue manager answered before Clara could speak.

"Ms. Mason became the sole owner of the Ashcroft Estate eight months ago."

Patricia laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

The manager calmly slid another document onto the table.

"The transfer was completed through Mason Hospitality Group."

Andrew frowned.

"I've never heard of that company."

Clara finally looked at him.

"You have."

"You just never knew it belonged to my family."

A ripple of whispers spread through the guests.

"My grandfather built this estate forty years ago," Clara continued.

"When he retired, he transferred ownership to me."

She gently picked up a torn piece of her wedding dress.

"I never told you because I wanted to know whether you loved me..."

"...or the life you thought I could give you."

Andrew lowered his eyes.

Patricia stepped forward.

"So this was some kind of test?"

Clara shook her head.

"No."

"It was simply the truth."

She looked around the ballroom.

"The only people who turned it into a test..."

"...were the people who judged me before they knew it."

The words struck harder than any accusation.

Patricia glanced toward the guests.
