Chapter 1: The Line in the Sand

The sound of the double doors slamming against the wall echoed like a gunshot through the sterile hospital room. Ethan’s heart stopped for a fraction of a second as his eyes locked onto the scene: his wife, Clara, weeping on the cold linoleum floor, her hands desperately trying to shield her belly from Victoria’s sharp, red stiletto.

"Get away from her!" Ethan’s voice vibrated with a terrifying, raw rage.

Before Victoria could even fully register the intrusion, Ethan lunged forward. He didn't care about his usual polished decorum or the fact that Victoria was the powerful matriarch of the city's largest pharmaceutical empire. He forcefully shoved Victoria back. Her expensive heels lost their grip on the smooth floor, and she stumbled backward, crashing into a metal tray of medical instruments before collapsing in a heap.

Ethan immediately dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he pulled Clara into his arms. "Clara, look at me. Are you okay? The baby?"

Clara was hyperventilating, clutching her stomach, her face stained with tears and sweat. "She... she wanted to kill him, Ethan. She said we don't deserve this child."

Behind them, Victoria pushed herself up, smoothing her crumpled burgundy dress with an eerie, cold composure. She sneered, wiping a speck of dust from her sleeve. "Don't be dramatic, Ethan. I was simply reminding your little surrogate-turned-wife of her place. You think you can just walk away from our family legacy for her?"

Ethan didn't look back at her. He kept his eyes on Clara, yelling for the terrified nurse who was peeking through the door. "Get a doctor in here right now! Check the baby!"

As the medical team rushed in, Ethan finally stood up, turning to Victoria with eyes like ice. "If anything happens to my wife or my child, Victoria, I won't just leave the company. I will destroy it. Get out."
