CHAPTER 3 — THE SILENCE THAT COST EVERYTHING

Andrew finally stepped toward Clara.
"I'll pay for the dress."
She looked at him quietly.
"Is that what you think this is about?"
He hesitated.
"My mother lost her temper."
"You know how she is."
Clara nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"I know exactly who she is."
Then she looked directly into his eyes.
"What I didn't know..."
"...was who you were."
The room became silent again.
"You watched her insult me."
"You watched her grab my dress."
"You watched her tear it apart."
"And you asked me to apologize."
Andrew lowered his head.
"I didn't want to embarrass my mother."
Clara answered softly.
"You chose protecting her pride over protecting your wife."
She removed her engagement ring.
The diamond caught the ballroom lights one last time.
"I can't spend my life waiting for you to find your courage."
She placed the ring inside his hand.
"Our marriage ends before it begins."
Gasps echoed throughout the hall.
Patricia stepped forward angrily.
"You can't cancel this wedding!"
Clara turned toward the venue manager.
"Please stop today's ceremony."
"Yes, Madam."
"And continue with tonight's dinner."
Andrew frowned.
"Dinner?"
Clara smiled gently.
"My father believed no prepared meal should ever be wasted."
She looked around the ballroom.
"Invite every shelter, children's home, emergency worker, and hospital staff member within the city."
"If they can arrive tonight..."
"They are our honored guests."
Within an hour, luxury wedding tables once reserved for wealthy socialites welcomed nurses ending long shifts, firefighters, teachers, veterans, foster families, and children who had never attended such an event.

The orchestra continued to play.
Only the audience had changed.
