Chapter 3 — The Price of Silence

Clara looked at Andrew for a long time.
Then she answered.
"Because I wanted to know whether you loved me..."
"...or what you thought I owned."
Andrew shook his head.
"That's not fair."
She smiled sadly.
"No."
"What happened today wasn't fair."
She pointed toward the torn wedding gown.
"When your mother humiliated me..."
"You said nothing."
Andrew lowered his eyes.
"I was trying to keep the peace."
Clara's voice became colder.
"There is no peace where one person accepts abuse."
"There is only permission."
Patricia exploded.
"Andrew!"
"Tell her this wedding is continuing."
Andrew opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The silence lasted only a few seconds.
For Clara...
It felt like years.
She reached into the leather folder.
Removed another document.
And handed it to Andrew.
He frowned.
"What is this?"
"Our prenuptial agreement."
"I never signed one."
"You refused."
"So I prepared something else."
He unfolded the pages.
His face drained of color.
It wasn't a prenuptial agreement.
It was a cancellation notice.
Every vendor.
Every reservation.
Every service.
Legally contracted by Clara's company.
Immediately terminated.
The orchestra packed their instruments.
The photographers lowered their cameras.
The florist quietly began removing centerpieces.
The head chef approached Clara.
"Would you like us to continue serving dinner?"
Clara nodded.
"Yes."
He smiled.
"For my guests."
Then she looked directly at Andrew.
"The Whitlock family..."
"...is no longer invited."
Gasps filled the hall.
Security stepped forward.
Not toward Clara.
Toward Patricia.
She pointed furiously.
"You can't throw us out!"
The venue manager answered before Clara could.
"Actually..."
"She can."
"She owns the building."
Patricia looked around desperately.
No one moved to help.
Because for the first time in her life...

Money could not buy authority.
Ownership had already spoken.
