CHAPTER 4 — No Child Left Behind

One year later...

The Bennett Foundation announced the largest project in its history.

Not another luxury museum.

Not another corporate headquarters.

Instead...

Victoria invested nearly half of her personal fortune into shelters, legal aid, and emergency housing for homeless children across New York City.

Every building carried the same words above its entrance:

The Twin Promise Center.

During the opening ceremony, reporters asked Victoria why she had abandoned philanthropy that benefited wealthy institutions.

She glanced toward two teenage boys laughing together across the courtyard.

One wore an expensive suit.

The other still preferred old hoodies, even though he now had a closet full of new clothes.

"They remind me every day," she said softly, "that the greatest tragedies aren't always caused by poverty."

"They're caused when people stop seeing children."

Noah never forgot the streets.

Once every month, he and Ethan walked the same Manhattan blocks where they had first met.

They carried backpacks filled with socks, blankets, sandwiches, and phone numbers for safe shelters.

Sometimes they simply sat beside kids who had nobody willing to listen.

One snowy evening, Ethan noticed Noah looking at the old silver locket.

"You still keep it?"

Noah smiled.

"I always will."

He opened it.

The faded baby photographs remained inside.

But the worn inscription had been restored beneath protective glass.

To our twin sons. May you always find each other.

Underneath, someone had added a second line.

And may no child ever have to find home alone again.

Years later, visitors entering the Bennett home often noticed that the most valuable item in the house wasn't a painting or a sculpture.

It was an old tarnished locket displayed inside a simple glass case.

When guests asked why it occupied the center of the living room, Victoria always answered the same way.

"Because money built this house."

She looked toward her two sons, arguing over a chess game and laughing so loudly the whole room echoed with life.

"But love..."

"...found the family that money could never replace."
