Chapter 13 - THE BOARDROOM

The board meeting began at nine.

By nine-oh-five, three directors had called me unstable.

At nine-ten, one suggested the staircase incident had been “a private family misunderstanding.”

At nine-twelve, Ethan placed the full security video on the screen.

No one spoke after that.

I sat at the head of the table in my father’s chair. Across from me were men and women who had known about failed equipment, hidden complaints, and suspicious payments.

Some claimed ignorance.

Some blamed Victor.

None accepted responsibility.

The company attorney challenged the ownership transfer. Julia produced the original document from the bank box, notarized and witnessed.

The attorney’s face changed.

“You knew this existed,” I said.

He removed his glasses. “Richard asked me to delay filing it.”

“No. Victor ordered you to bury it.”

He did not answer.

I called for a vote to suspend every executive under investigation, release internal records to federal authorities, and establish a medical compensation fund.

One director laughed. “That would bankrupt us.”

“Then we sell the headquarters.”

“You cannot destroy a century-old company.”

“Machines bearing our name endangered patients. The company destroyed itself.”

The vote failed by one.

Then the doors opened.

Samuel entered with Rosa beside him.

He carried the original engineer approval log. It proved four board members had personally signed altered reports.

Those directors were removed from voting due to conflict.

The motion passed.

By noon, Hawthorne Medical Systems had turned over its entire archive to investigators. Trading was suspended. News cameras surrounded the building.

I expected to feel victorious.

Instead, I felt tired.

Ethan found me alone in my father’s office.

“You did what he asked,” he said.

“I tore down what he built.”

“You tore down the lie protecting it.”

My phone rang.

Detective Morales.

Victor had offered a full confession in exchange for avoiding trial. He admitted arranging my father’s crash, my mother’s fire, Samuel’s kidnapping, and the attempt on me.

But he refused to identify one final partner.

“There is another person?” I asked.

“Someone inside the company warned him before every investigation.”

The office door opened.

The family lawyer, Martin Hale, entered carrying a folder.

“I think I can help with that,” he said.

Before Ethan could stop him, Martin locked the door.

Then he pulled a small pistol from beneath the folder.

“I spent thirty years cleaning up Hawthorne mistakes,” he said. “I will not let you hand my life to the police.”
