Chapter 1: The Bracelet No One Was Supposed to See

The wineglass shattered across the marble floor.
Nobody moved.
The sound echoed beneath the crystal chandeliers like a gunshot.
Richard Ashcroft never dropped anything.
Not his composure.
Not his temper.
Certainly not a glass.
Yet his eyes never left the faded silver bracelet around Sophie's wrist.
His voice came out barely above a whisper.
"...Where did you get that?"
Sophie instinctively stepped backward.
Victoria tightened her grip on the little girl's shoulder.
"It's just cheap costume jewelry," Victoria snapped. "Take it off."
Richard's head turned sharply.
"No."
The single word froze the room.
Victoria forced a smile.
"Richard, she's only a servant's child."
"I said..."
His voice hardened.
"No one touches that bracelet."
The guests exchanged uneasy glances.
Richard slowly reached toward Sophie's trembling hand.
The bracelet was old.
Handmade.
Its silver had darkened with age.
Tiny vines wrapped around its surface.
Hidden among the engraved leaves was a small family crest.
One he recognized instantly.
Richard felt his heartbeat stumble.
Impossible.
That crest had disappeared twenty-five years ago.
Along with the woman who wore it.
"Who gave this to you?" he asked gently.
Sophie swallowed.
"My mommy."
"And where is your mother now?"
The little girl's eyes filled with tears.
"She died last winter."
A silence settled over the ballroom.
Richard closed his eyes.
"What was her name?"
"Emily Carter."
Victoria suddenly inhaled sharply.
Richard noticed.
Slowly...
He turned toward his wife.
"You knew that name."
It wasn't a question.
Victoria's face had already answered.
Before anyone could speak again...
A folded photograph slipped from Sophie's coat pocket.
It landed face-up on the marble floor.
Richard bent down.
Picked it up.
Then everything inside him stopped.
The faded picture showed a young woman smiling beside a lake.
On her wrist...
The very same bracelet.
Standing beside her...
Was Richard.
Twenty-six years younger.
His arm wrapped around her shoulders.
Behind the photograph, written in careful handwriting, were seven simple words.
If anything happens, find Richard Ashcroft.

Richard's hands began to shake.
Victoria looked as though all the blood had drained from her body.
