Chapter 2: When the House Began to Speak

The crash of Ravenshore's front doors echoed through the mansion like thunder.

The string quartet downstairs stopped playing.

Champagne glasses froze halfway to waiting lips.

Three hundred distinguished guests—judges, senators, philanthropists, business leaders—turned toward the entrance.

Dominic Kane stepped inside.

He wore a perfectly tailored black overcoat, leather gloves, and the expression of a man who had already decided how the night would end.

Behind him came twelve security professionals, two attorneys, three forensic investigators, and a retired federal prosecutor.

No one raised a weapon.

No one needed to.

Power had entered the room.

A state senator whispered nervously,

"Why is Dominic Kane here?"

An elderly judge answered without taking his eyes off the staircase.

"If Kane comes himself..."

"...someone upstairs has made a fatal mistake."

Upstairs, Grayson Langford heard the front doors open.

His smile faded.

"What is this?"

Before anyone answered, Dominic appeared in the library doorway.

His eyes ignored Grayson.

Ignored Celeste.

Ignored Paige.

They found Harper immediately.

She was sitting on the floor, blood running down her face, one hand wrapped around her injured wrist.

For one endless moment...

Nothing else existed.

Dominic slowly removed his gloves.

"I'm sorry it took five minutes."

Harper tried to smile through the pain.

"You came."

"I gave you my word."

He walked toward her.

Grayson stepped into his path.

"She's my daughter."

Dominic looked at him calmly.

"No."

"A father protects."

"You own nothing but her last name."

Grayson laughed.

"You think you can walk into my house and accuse me?"

Dominic nodded once.

"No."

"I don't accuse."

"I verify."

He turned toward one of his investigators.

"Begin."

Within seconds, technicians connected specialized equipment to the mansion's security network.

Grayson suddenly became pale.

"What are you doing?"

The investigator answered quietly.

"Recovering your surveillance system."

"It was disabled," Grayson insisted.

"No."

"It was hidden."

"The recordings never stopped."

Five minutes later...

Every television in Ravenshore lit up simultaneously.

The ballroom projector activated without warning.

Three hundred guests watched in stunned silence.

The footage showed Harper entering the library carrying legal documents.

Then Grayson followed.

Then Celeste.

Then Paige.

There was no audio.

There didn't need to be.

Everyone watched Grayson slam Harper's hand into the antique desk drawer.

Again.

And again.

They watched Paige strike Harper across the face with the broken champagne flute.

They watched Celeste calmly lock the library door.

A horrified gasp swept across the ballroom.

One guest whispered,

May you like

"My God..."

"The house recorded everything."
