CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET EVERYONE MISSED

Hours later...

Damian sat alone in the executive office that no longer belonged to him.

The walls suddenly felt unfamiliar.

A soft knock came at the door.

It was Arthur Benson.

The company's oldest accountant.

Forty-three years with Voss Global.

Arthur placed a thick leather ledger on the desk.

"I think you should finally see this."

Damian frowned.

"What is it?"

"History."

Inside were financial records stretching back nearly fifteen years.

Every major acquisition.

Every international expansion.

Every emergency loan that had quietly saved the company.

Beside nearly every transaction appeared the same signature.

Elena Voss.

Arthur sighed.

"When the financial crisis nearly destroyed us..."

"She mortgaged her own inheritance."

"When your overseas project failed..."

"She sold one of her private estates to cover the losses."

"When investors wanted you removed..."

"She convinced them to give you another chance."

Damian slowly lowered the ledger.

"I never knew."

Arthur looked at him sadly.

"Because you never asked."

"You accepted the applause."

"And assumed someone else was simply lucky enough to stand behind you."

That afternoon...

Veronica quietly packed her designer handbags.

Without money...

Without influence...

Without luxury...

She had no reason to stay.

She left without saying goodbye.

For the first time in years...

Damian truly stood alone.
