Chapter 2: Shifting Scales

In the quiet sanctuary of the hotel’s private VIP lounge, the chaos of the ballroom faded. Emma knelt beside Isabella’s wheelchair, handing the elderly woman a glass of warm water.

"Thank you, child," Isabella said, her voice gentle as she reached out to touch Emma’s rough, hardworking hands. "You have your father's eyes. Good eyes. Honest eyes."

Emma blinked back tears, the exhaustion of her double shifts and financial burdens suddenly weighing heavily on her. "I just couldn't watch her hurt you, ma'am. Nobody deserves to be treated like they are invisible."

The door opened, and Vincent Moretti walked in. Without the crowd around him, his presence was even more intense. He walked over to his mother, kissing her forehead gently before turning his full attention to Emma.

"Victoria Langford has been permanently removed from this venue," Vincent stated, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored suit. "By tomorrow morning, her foundations will be audited, and her influence in this city will cease to exist. Nobody touches a Moretti and survives the fallout."

He stepped closer to Emma, pulling a black leather notebook from his pocket. "My security chief did a quick background check on you, Emma Carter. You work eighty hours a week. Your father is Daniel Carter, a former foreman who suffered a stroke. You pay for your sister's tuition and his medical bills alone."

Emma stiffened, feeling exposed. "Are you going to fire me, Mr. Moretti?"

"Fire you?" Vincent’s stoic face softened into a rare, genuine expression of respect. "You saved my mother when my own paid security failed to see the danger. The Moretti family does not leave its debts unpaid. As of tonight, your father’s medical bills are paid in full. Your sister's tuition is completely covered through a private trust. And you are no longer a waitress."
