CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH SHE COULD NOT ESCAPE

Victoria lowered the letter with shaking hands.
Every word carried the weight of ten lost years.
Claire explained that she had never left because she hated her family.
She had left to protect them.
Years earlier, she had discovered financial crimes committed by her husband.
When she refused to stay silent, he threatened anyone she loved.
Including Victoria.
Rather than expose her sister to danger, Claire disappeared without explaining why.
She raised Lily alone.
Working two jobs.
Moving from city to city.
Never asking for help.
Now...
She was battling a serious illness.
The letter ended with one heartbreaking sentence.
"I don't need your money. I only hope Lily will know she has family."
Victoria could no longer hold back her tears.
She looked toward the little girl still covered in cake.
Only minutes earlier...
She had believed Lily was an uninvited child ruining an elegant party.
Now she saw her niece.
The last gift her sister had protected at any cost.
Victoria slowly knelt before Lily.
"I'm sorry."
"I hurt you before I even knew your name."
Lily hesitated.
Then quietly asked,
"Can I still call you Aunt Victoria?"
The question broke what remained of Victoria's pride.
She embraced Lily carefully, trying not to frighten her.

Around them, guests watched in complete silence.
No one had expected the cruelest moment of the evening to become its most honest.
