Chapter 5: Never Leave Anyone Behind
Apologies are easy.
Change is difficult.
Alexander understood that now.

He started showing up.
Every morning.
Breakfast together.
Every Thursday.
ASL lessons.
Every Saturday night.
They used the telescope on the mansion's roof.
Sometimes they spoke for hours without saying a single word.
Lucy continued visiting the estate.
Not as the maid's daughter.
As Matthew's best friend.
Alexander insisted Clara receive a promotion to Director of Household Operations with a significant raise, recognizing years of loyal leadership—not as charity, but as acknowledgment of her professional excellence.
He also funded scholarships for deaf students across Connecticut.
Every Vale Foundation employee received mandatory deaf-awareness and basic ASL training.
More importantly...
Alexander became one of the first students.
His early signs were awkward.
Matthew laughed often.
Alexander laughed too.
For once, neither of them minded making mistakes.
Months later, the Vale Observatory opened on the foundation's campus.
Children with and without hearing disabilities explored the stars together.
Above the entrance, carved into white stone, were the words:
NEVER LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND.
When reporters asked Alexander why he chose that motto, he smiled.
"It wasn't my idea."
He looked toward Lucy, who stood beside Matthew beneath the giant telescope.
"It came from an old soldier who understood that courage isn't measured by how loudly you speak."
"It's measured by whether you're willing to cross a room when everyone else looks away."
Matthew reached over and gently tapped Lucy's shoulder.
She looked at him.
He signed the very first word she had ever said to him.
Friend.
She smiled and answered with perfect confidence.
Always.
Above them, countless stars shone across the silent sky.
