Chapter 2 – The Secret Nobody Wanted Told

William asked everyone to remain where they were.
Then he turned to Daniel.
"You may tell me anything."
"No one will interrupt you."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"They lock my bedroom when Dad travels."
"They tell Maria she can't visit."
"I eat dinner alone."
"When I cry..."
"She says boys from rich families don't cry."
He pointed toward his stepmother, Vanessa.
The ballroom fell silent again.
Maria closed her eyes.
She had suspected far more than she had ever witnessed.
Daniel continued.
"When I get scared..."
"I sleep with the blanket Maria made."
"Vanessa threw it away."
Several guests lowered their heads.
William's expression hardened.
He looked toward Maria.
"Did you know?"
She hesitated.
"I knew he was lonely."
"I never imagined..."
"...it had become this bad."
William called the family's attorney forward.
"Delay every ceremony."
Then he turned to the head of household security.
"No employee leaves this estate tonight."
Alexander stepped forward.
"Father, you're overreacting."
William looked directly into his son's eyes.
"Am I?"
He pointed toward one corner of the ballroom.
A small security camera blinked quietly above the entrance.
"I've already requested the recordings."
Vanessa's face lost all color.
Earlier that evening...
She had ordered Maria to leave through the service hallway.
She never realized the cameras had captured everything.
The footage showed Daniel desperately trying to follow Maria.
Vanessa pulling him back by the arm.
Maria quietly wiping away tears before walking toward the exit.
There was no performance.
No coaching.
No manipulation.
Only a frightened little boy running toward the one person who had always made him feel safe.
William watched every second.
When the recording ended...

He spoke only once.
"My grandson has already told us who his family is."
