Chapter 1: The Boy Who Asked for Help

The shattered plate echoed through the restaurant.
Every conversation stopped.
Ethan's mother hurried to his side.
"Honey... what did he say?"
Ethan looked from his mother to the frightened homeless boy.
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"He said... 'Don't call the police. They'll find me before the good people do.'"
The boy immediately lowered his head.
"I'm sorry," he murmured. "I shouldn't have talked to you."
He turned toward the door.
Ryan Carter, Ethan's father, stepped into his path—not to block him, but to kneel until they were eye level.
"My name is Ryan."
"I'm not going to force you to do anything."
"But someone wrote those words on your arm."
The boy instinctively pulled down his sleeve.
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to us."
For several long seconds, the child said nothing.
Finally, he whispered, "My name is Noah."
He couldn't have been older than thirteen.
His clothes were several sizes too big.
His hands trembled every time someone walked past the windows.
Then the restaurant manager quietly locked the front door.
"No one's leaving until we know this child is safe."
