CHAPTER 3 — The Recording Behind the Portrait

Within thirty minutes, detectives arrived.

Vivian repeated the same story.

Rosa pushed Margaret.

Margaret fell.

The child was confused.

It almost sounded believable.

Until the mansion's elderly groundskeeper stepped forward.

His name was Samuel.

He had worked for the Whitmores for fifty years.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

"I think there's something you should know."

He led Nathaniel into the old library.

Behind an enormous portrait of Nathaniel's grandfather was a narrow maintenance hallway.

Hidden inside was a security monitor.

Years earlier, Margaret had quietly installed a second surveillance system after discovering valuables disappearing from the estate.

Unlike the visible cameras...

Nobody knew these existed.

Not even Vivian.

Samuel inserted a memory card.

The screen flickered to life.

There it was.

Margaret climbing the stairs with her cane.

Vivian approaching from behind.

A brief conversation.

Margaret shook her head.

Vivian's expression hardened.

Then...

One deliberate shove.

Margaret's body tumbled down the staircase.

Vivian calmly adjusted her dress.

Walked to the top step.

Waited several seconds.

Only then...

She screamed.

Nathaniel watched without blinking.

When the recording ended, he quietly asked,

"How long have you known?"

Samuel lowered his head.

"I found the system after Mrs. Whitmore fell."

"I wanted to be certain before accusing anyone."

Nathaniel nodded once.

"Thank you."

He returned to the foyer carrying only the memory card.

Vivian smiled confidently.

"I've told everyone exactly what happened."

Nathaniel looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

"You told everyone the version that made you innocent."

He handed the memory card to the lead detective.

"Play it."

The ballroom-sized foyer fell silent as the truth unfolded on the screen.

No one looked away.

No one could.

When the video ended, the detective turned toward Vivian.

"Miss Cole..."

"You're under arrest for attempted murder, obstruction of justice, and making false statements."

May you like

Vivian whispered only one sentence.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."
