Chapter 2: The Recording That Changed Everything

Christopher never raised his voice.

He simply reached into the inside pocket of his tailored coat while still holding Emma tightly against his chest.

"I've spent five years building billion-dollar companies," he said quietly. "Do you really think I'd leave my daughter alone with someone I stopped trusting months ago?"

Juliette's face drained of color.

Christopher pulled out his phone and pressed a single button.

The courtyard speakers suddenly crackled to life.

At first, there was only the sound of wind...

Then Emma's tiny voice.

"Please... Mommy Juliette... Daddy said not to go near the pool."

A second later came Juliette's cold reply.

"He won't be your daddy much longer."

Every guest froze.

The family attorney slowly lowered his champagne glass.

The house staff stared at one another in disbelief.

Juliette's breathing became uneven.

Christopher played the next clip.

The hidden audio recorder sewn inside Emma's favorite teddy bear captured every word.

"You know why you're here, don't you?" Juliette whispered.

Emma sniffled.

"No..."

"Because after you're gone, everything your mother left behind belongs to me."

Several guests gasped.

Juliette lunged toward Christopher's phone.

He stepped aside effortlessly.

The recording continued.

A splash.

Emma screaming.

Then silence.

Finally...

Juliette's calm voice.

"Nobody will ever believe a dead child."

The courtyard fell completely silent.

Christopher slowly looked toward the uniformed police officers who had just entered through the estate gates.

"I believe," he said.

"So will they."

Juliette collapsed onto the marble stones before anyone touched her.

Still...

Christopher wasn't finished.

Not even close.

Because Juliette had only been a pawn.

The real monster had been hiding inside his own family all along.

His own mother.

Victoria Sterling.

The woman standing perfectly still beneath the white garden pavilion.

Smiling.

As if none of this surprised her.

Christopher met her eyes.

"I know you planned every second of this."

May you like

For the first time in twenty years...

Victoria stopped smiling.
